Absolutely mental. I can sort of understand them banning old bangers, but they would also be banning lots of classic supercars such as Lamborghini's and Aston Martins. Yes the safety aspect is there, but in terms of 'image' (Which seems to be a high priority of Dubai these days), they really are shooting themselves in the foot.

What are other people opinions on this?

Backward idea for a backward country.

Title is wrong, apparently, they are banning 20year old cars.

Still backward, just not quite as backward as before!

The law does provide a provision to protect owners of 'genuinely classic or historic vehicles' a commission is to be set up where an owner can explain why their car should not be scrapped even though it is 10 years old.

I imagine they'll manage to make some exceptions ;)

From 2010 the transfer of ownership of a vehicle over 10 years old will also be illegal, in other words you cannot sell the vehicle on. This leaves two options scrap the vehicle or export it to another, more lenient, country.

Its probably to stop young morons from skating through the streets on their sandals attached to the doors of cars older than 10 years and from pulling stupid drift moves. Possibly.

No, more like to get all the pants cars off the road so the place looks even richer.

BTW you can keep true classics....

A definition of a classic has yet to be confirmed by the Emirate's ministry

I don't think its such a bad idea tbh.

There's only about 10,000 cars there that will be subject to this regulation, out of ~600,000, IIRC :)

Sultan Abdullah Al Marzouqi of the Dubai Roads and Transports Authority (RTA) said: “I believe the rule will not affect the majority of motorists for years to come as only 10 percent of cars are older than 10 years, and some 82 percent of cars are between one and five years old.”
