How much of a performance boost could I expect to see going from an 8800GT to the GTX-260? Worth making the leap now or better holding off for 6 months or so?

I also notice the GTX260 is listed as being PCI-E 2.0, would this mean it may not be compatible with my present motherboard?

8800gt is pcie2.0 too :) are you finding anything you can't play on your 8800gt? The 260 would be a good jump but if you're not struggling it would be worth holding out for a little longer. Moreso if you only play at 1680 x 1050 and below.

Nah I can play everything on it, but Crysis goes into complete meltdown if I try and move the settings above medium. With a few good games coming out soon was thinking it may be worth and upgrade so I can get the most out of them, although if the performance boost isn't going to be massive I won't bother.

Depends on what games you play and the res. Mass Effect was unplayable in parts are 1920x1080 with 4x AA on my Zotac Amp edition 8800GT but twice the framerate with 8x AA on a 260GTX (216). Same with Crysis - gone from all high settings at 720p to 1080p and it's even smoother.

Definitely a good upgrade but it's probably the worst value part I've bought all year given the current high prices.

dont upgrade for one game

keep your 8800gt - you wont get much second hand
plus its still a great card

i would wait until the next lot before spending

Cheers for the advice folks. Think I'll just hold off til next year, then upgrade my processor to quad-core & get a new GPU at the same time.

Probably best holding off although i must say the 260 is a great card. Plays stalker with everything full @ 1920x1200 with no problems at all.

Used to have dual 4850's and although the single 260 isn't as fast i find the gaming experience a little smoother. I also prefer the nv drivers as they seem a touch more stable for me.

For what you could sell the GT for i would expect you'd then be able to either add £70 or so to get a 4850 or around £120 or so to get a 260.

I was think about big card like 260 or 280 but I went for 2 x GF9600GT XXX cos it so cheap for using 2 cards into SLi mode... I wouldnae waste of money for big card.
