The forgotten phone - N85

Had a play around with it in the store - I am quite dissapointed (remember this is after a 5 min play around). I found the buttons quite annoying - ie easy to make mistakes and press the wrong button. Also there were no transition effects, it just looked like the N95 OSwise really.

No transition effects?!?

Damn all the youtube movies lied :(

I just popped into the Nokia UK flagship store on Regent Street and managed to get a good 15 - 20min play. I have to say I am a little disappointed :(

The good stuff is that the menu is really smooth, much smoother than the N96. The transition effects are very slick and the interface seems really fast. The screen is bright with very nicely defined colours (black is BLACK).

The bad stuff is that it has exceptionally poor build quality. The buttons on the front are horrible to use and feel really very cheap. In fact it makes the N95/N96 seem very solid in comparison.

In fact the N96 impressed me far more today than it did a few weeks ago when I first had a go. Apparently there was a new firmware very recently that has solved a lot of bugs people have seen. It also added transitions to the menu and the screen rotation (although not quite as spiffy as the N85 transitions).

The handsets I tried (were loads in store so I tried a few different handsets, including ones with older firmware) seemed quite solidly built too.

I'd have to wholeheartedly agree with you. I am quite disappointed with the N85 too - the way its built does not make it easy to navigate around - the control pad is hard to use compared to the N95 8GB, in addition it isnt as quick as the N95 8GB. I am more and more convinced the N95 8GB is the far better option (I sold mine in anticipation of the N85)..

Whats the best deal on this phone at the moment?
It only seems to be on orange and vodaphone while I'm on PAYG with O2.
I like the FM transmitter but now that I hear its got really bad build quality, should I opt for the N96 instead?
