I've just signed-up for a new insurance policy and they're asking for evidence of my no claims bonuses.

Obviously I have to contact my previous insurer, but in the past I've found this process to be like wading through treacle. Is there any sure fire way to make sure previous insurers send out a letter asap?

Is writing a letter to them better than email for example?

I changed to Endsleigh 2 years ago and they just took my old policy number and that was enough proof, went with Zurich Insurance this year and they never asked for any proof at all. I suspect your NCB is actually stored on the MID insurance database and all the insurance companies have access to your driving/insurance/accidnt history.

You renewal price/letter should have your NCB on it. I have previously just faxed a copy of that.

It deosn't actually mention how many years no claims I have.

Esure (my new insurers) are asking me to send them proof of my 3 years ncb.

A phone call should be good enough, I've rang insurers from a year and 2 years ago and they send a letter out right away.

Halifax(Esure) asked, but then told me not to bother as they have done away with asking for proof

Something about it being an old letter template...
