Jobs away from IT!

I've been in IT for about 4 years now, I'm really starting to detest it and want to get away from it. Every Sunday I get pretty depressed at the thought of going into work the following morning, not good!

I only got into IT as my Dad was into it so I got interested and pretty competent on a PC so it seemed natural that I'd apply for an IT job. I've gone through the ranks at where I work and now am on 2nd/3rd line support that is half in the office, half driving out to various places fixing IT issues. It's quite a nice job really for those who'd enjoy IT. Working for the Council doesn't pay well neither really but the job is safe.

Problem is I have no idea of what I'd like to do, I have no degree just A levels (In IT)

I'm curious to people have been in the same position as me and what job they've gone too? Need some inspiration, I had my heart set on the fire service but they've stopped applications for a year now. Even then it's no dead cert that I'd get a jon.

I own a house etc, now so higher eduction really isn't an option and the job must pay sub £20k.

Thanks!

Open University

University of London External program

(and if you're in London)

Birkbeck College, University of London

(edit OK so you're not in London but the first two still apply)

im kind of in the same boat, IT is doing my nut in, way to kill a hobby eh? only been doing it a couple of years though.

considering going uni myself atm and maybe doing a degree in something more specialist such as higher level networking/programming/security but i can't help but feel i would get bored of these too. :(

to the OP, open university may be the best option if you already have responsibilities under you now.

I jumped from the IT ship and now I'm a shop manager four days a week and work on the web/mail order side of things for two days a week. I love it and wouldn't change it for the world.

So many people in IT want to change job and they all have one thing in common - IT Support.

Totally understand how you feel Andy, in the same kind of predicament myself at the moment after 4 years of IT it's starting to get me down. I'm not totally sure it's not just my current work/job place thats got to me so my first step is to make a sideways step to do something IT related but not support and see how I feel after a year or two.

I've done the Uni route already so hopefully that will help me out somewhere along the line even thou I did Computer Science also of jobs seem to like any sort of degree.

If that does not work or I can't get a half decent job I'll be resurrecting this thread.

I feel your pain, I'm almost 35 and still don't know what I want to do for a living. I guess you always expect you will know what you want or should be doing. Most people I know seem to luck into a career that suits them.

I think the only way I will find a job that really suits me is if I win or inherit enough money so that bills don't matter and I can take up a career of choosing which pays less than half my current wages.

The sub 20k is surely a typing mistake.

I got out of IT support a couple of years ago and decided on a complete career change so returned to Uni to do a radiography degree. Just started my second year and really enjoying it.

Been in I.T. for the last 6 years. Started right from the bottom and I mean deep deep down at the bottom - working for the support arm of the purple shirt brigade. Things have got a lot better since then but I'm fed up with it too.

I'd love to become a vet or a zoologist. Unfortunately recent depletions in my time and money mean I can't go down that route.

When you guys mean in IT, which part of IT?

I work as a Linux System Administrator and find my job really exciting at times. Have you thought about a different direction in IT? Or joining a startup? I started out in a startup company, huge responsibilities with such little experience and great fun.

Not necessarily - IT web and app development can be just as frustrating and kill your love of computers / programming.

I would say that the staying power in an IT role depends almost 90% on the company and environment you work in. Smaller firms allow you to work in a more flexible and generally more satisfying way.

12 years in tech support and feeling the same way, glad to see I'm not the only one.
Job itself it great, but when you bang your head against the wall because mgmt never listen to warnings and profit means more than maintenance, its pointless.
Mind goes blank when I try and think about another career.

I have gone back to college, learning basic plumbing, then hoping to take it further, going to do some basic brick laying and joinery courses as well.

Why does it need to be sub 20k? That rules out quite a few jobs...

Maybe part-time would be better, but I can't think of many jobs that are both decent and part-time I'm afraid...

Sorry, I meant it had to be around £20k in order for me to pay my mortgage, etc etc. I'd happily go to a job I'd enjoy that paid less if I could afford too, unfortunately I don't have that option now.

I'm sure you'll be able to get something for 20k or more without too much trouble, but it helps a lot if it's something you enjoy...

What about being an Ambulance driver? I noticed you wanted to be a Fireman but I know Ambulance drivers get training (and a test) which may even help if you want to jump and and apply to the Fire service (once they start taking applications again)?
