I am looking to upgrade from my 7600GT and am hoping to spend about 50 pounds. I've been looking at the 8800GS 384, the 8800GT 256 and the 3850 512. I was wondering which would be the best for gaming at max 1280x1024 res. Does the 256mb on the 8800GT really hold it back that much?

EDIT: I take it a GFX upgrade would be best for the spec in my sig?

256mb really does hold back the 8800gt

Your best back for you buck as said will be 512mb 8800

Seen as you have an sli board you should try to pick up a pair :p

I wish i had money for Sli, thats what you get for being at school with no job :(

How much do 2nd hand 512s go for these days?

EDIT: Oh and i take it the antec earthwatts 380W could take one?

I dont like spending lots of money on hardware as it just depreciates, and when you dont have any income (except pocket money) you look after your pennies :D. Basically, the 3850/8800GT/8800GS look very good value at the moment and so they have tempted me and im wondering which one to get.

theres the 3870 as well. The cheapest new one on overclockers is £70. You will struggle to beat that price.

However, second hand, you can get them for under £50 the same goes for the 8800GT though. Which is a better card :).

So yeah go get a second hand 512 Mb 8800GT. DO NOT GET THE 256MB version!

Saving pennies for what ?

I was at school once, It was BMX bikes back then and I was always buying new parts for the sake of it and they cost a lot of cash as all latest parts did.

1) Pocket money

2) Paper round.

3 ) Wash peeps cars or such, makes you the most cash).

:)

I hear what you're saying, but I've decided to go with a 3850 512 as there is a nicely priced one in the OCuk sale which I will be ordering and i just noticed the reccommended wattage is 450W

If you don't fancy getting one second hand, and the aforementioned second-hand 8800GT is the best option in my opinion. Then I'd agree with getting the 4670 over the 3850, I'd probably go for the HIS IceQ Turbo given the ~£3 difference over the Powercolor, but others may know better.

You can get a new 8800GT for just over £70 with the 6% offer, I think it would be worth the difference if you could stretch yourself to it.

8800gt 2nd hand

i would presonally wait and get something better

check out my guide in the sig - might help you/might not -

That's quite a funky guide rjkoneill.

Can you clarify what you mean when you say he should wait, i.e.

A) Wait for a card that hasn't been released yet.
B) Wait for the prices on existing cards to drop.
C) Save up for an existing card at it's current price.
D) A combination of saving and waiting for price drops.
E) No, no. I meant something else entirely.

Phew, that looks a lot more like an inquisition than was meant.

Cheers.

ooooo OCUK just dropped all their prices

EDIT: or not, the VAT isnt showing up :/
