Hi all,

Friend of mine is looking to buy a 2002-2003 Audi RS6.

Just wanted to know what we should be looking out for and what are they like to own...

Thanks

it's a beast, but don't expect to see over 20mpg average and it'll cost about 3 grand a year in servicing and tyres :D

my mate at work has one and every time we go out in it I'm grinning from ear to ear, the sound of a 4.2 v8 bi-turbo is pant wettingly good

Relentless expense.

which is worth if the owner has the money for a twin-turbocharged version of Audi's aluminum, 4.2-litre, double overhead cam, 40-valve, V8 engine!!

500bhp for nothing after revo!

16k for a 2004 with 60k and warrenty isn't that bad would have one over a m5! (even though im buying a m5 in a few weeks with my own money!)

My friend had an '04 RS6 for about a year (selling it about 7 months ago due to a move to the US).

A couple of things went wrong for him: the alternator gave up and required recovery back to the dealer, and as the engine bay of the RS6 is full of cylinders, turbos and intercoolers, it’s a front bumper-off job to change the alternator – cue a bill for £900.
Although he didn’t have it long enough to need a brake change, the discs on the RS6 are enormous (as are the tyres), so expect a fair chunk there.

Just before he sold it, the right-rear developed a ‘creak’ (which is a common RS6 complaint) to which the main dealer suggested that ‘around £1500’ would be needed to fix.

Don’t forget the premium fuel (which it loves at a rate of 12-15mpg on spirited drives).

Saying that though, it was absolute joy to drive, and he regularly commuted to Brussels in it; the relentless urge of the power delivery was incredibly addictive, and although the ride was stiff and pretty harsh, it wasn’t too bad.

How old are you? What do you currently drive?

You release the purchase price of an M5 is just the beginning of a long line of extreme wallet bashing?

the guy at my work has been stung for that 3 times  I can't remember exactly what it was, he did tell me. I'll need to ask him when I see him

edit: ah his problems were caused by the infamous dynamic ride control problem

im 25 and have a daily run about of a 306 gti6 and a mk1 golf gti convertable for run to the sun and the weekend. Just got rid of my company car so have that extra money to use for monthly running costs.

Im aware of the costs well most!! the car im buying has had the major stuff (VANOS etc )done so should be just other bits etc to do.

I think i should only have it maybe a year or just over, the plan is to pick up a cls 500 or 550 2006-2007 next year for long term.

Mate some advice I was given when I was looking at silly cars (and wish I'd listened to!) is to make sure you have enough cash to buy the car, and the same again to fix it when it goes wrong. If you have the cash then go for it and enjoy. :D

Not sure if its up there with Ferrari "if you can't afford two you can't afford to run one" but buying M-Power cars the purchase price is definitely only the beginning - people tend to forget that these cars cost £50k+ new, the parts & running costs are commensurate with that.

I own a 2000 RS4 and no matter what you think about "oh it's been done" it doesn't mean it won't break next week.

It's got supercar performance - expect super car prices to run it...

I'm just about to get a £2000 bill for mine...

Agreed. A neighbour recently bought a mint 52 plate M3 hard top. A week later he finds out it needs new disks, pads and rear tyres as the pressure was wrong.

All his fault for not checking I know. The £1000 bill made was great for him too!

Which is why it worries me to find people saying 'Going to get an M5 because a mate is selling it cheap'. If thats a decider for you its probably the wrong car..

I don't know why you worry, it's no loss to you.

Apart from the jealousy ;)
