Right, I'm clearly doing it wrong but I don't know why?

I download the update firmware software, run it, turn off my phone, pull out the battery and replace it, and press "c" while I turn it back on and replug my USB cable.

Nothing happens. It just sits there. No status of it doing anything? What am I doing wrong? :(

I've just used the updater within the PC suite and it's worked fine on my K800.
As you didn't say I'll mention that you need to hold the C button down while you plug the USB cable into the phone, and then continue to hold it down until it says to release the button.

It only needed to be held for a few seconds until the message came up.

Ah, see that's the thing which is confusing me - I don't get any message telling me I can release the C button. How long did you have to wait for it? I have tried this on my laptop too and it still doesn't work.

The truely odd thing, is that on my older K800i - it didn't work either. Truely baffling.

What's the order that you did things. I click the battery back in, press the power button, and then press and hold C. Once C is held - I plug it back into my computer.

These were the instructions that I got when updating.

1) Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Mine was around 80% - 90% charged

2) Connect the USB cable to a USB port on your PC.
I had to start again as I connected both ends of the cable the first time.

3) Turn off phone

4) Remove and reinsert the battery
I waited 2 - 3 seconds before reinserting the battery.

5) Press and hold the C-button on the phone while plugging the USB cable into your phone.

6) Continue holding the C-button.
I only had wait 5 - 10 seconds before the message appeared telling me to release the C-button.

I tried to update the software on a K850i and had the same problem. I followed the on screen instructions to the letter, ended up keeping the 'c' key held down for about 3 minutes with a rapidly tiring thumb, and nothing seemingly happened. Eventually the on screen display reverted back to the start and I assumed it was done, even though there was no acknowledgement saying "well done". The software on the phone remained unchanged.

This is what is happening to me as well. I have just tried it again.

Now though, when I hold down C, and replug the phone to the USB cable, I get a cannot find hardware message from Win Vista64.

Do you guys have Sony Ericsson's own PC Suite installed? Will I have to reinstall it?

Anyone know if this works on Vista yet? Ladt time i tried it wasnt compatible with updating by vista

^Ah, that might be the problem even though SE's website states that it is Vista compatible.

I've just left it running after pressing and holding the C button (for far longer than 10-15 seconds), and the phone's gone into "Do not remove the USB cable until you have exited the application on your PC" mode, and Windows once again can't find drivers. It's looking for something called "Semboot". I think.

Ok, just uninstalled all of S.E.'s software on Vista 32 and it's now updating. I have to say I tried this before, and it didn't work.

Slight fail on S.E.'s behalf.

Key problem here is that after taking the battery out, reinserting and holding down c you are pressing the power button on the phone. Don't!

Once the battery is reinserted hold down c then insert the usb cable. Do not touch the power button at all.

Hope this helps :)
