I have been a student for 2 years and has managed to live, and now I am saving up as I need to! :)

What meals are good and cheap to make? (Not rubbish), also what other ways are good to save or manage money?

1) Get all your moneys into a big ISA account and start saving today!!

2) Buy more generic food from stores. I find Asda Smart Price bread to be really nice toasted, better than most leading brands, need I say. I even buy thier cheap-o Cola I used to hate. Drink water (it's almost free). Frozen and tinned goods keep longer.

3) Watch out for reductions, stores like Asda reduce foods to sell before they expire - take advantage.

4) Electirc, use less of it. Try turning the fridge down on the thermo and keep it more shut.

5) Bulk buy more items.

6) When it comes to clothes you can buy off-season clothes or buy cheaper clothes from George, Primark, Peacocks, Matalan.

7) Try deal sites like HotdealsUK (use the RSS too) and keep upto date with what cheap offers are worth it.

8) Car? wouldn't bother, tax, mot, repairs, gas and insurance ... walk more and bike more which brings me onto the next:

9) Better health. = less doctors and a happier life.

10) Spend less when you are out too, insted of fast food, come home and eat cheaper.

11) Keep an eye on your money and savings. Make realistic targets.

12) Get a job (easier said than done)

Depends on what your incomings and outgoings are really.

I was a self-supported student for 2 years and speaking from experience, the only thing that ever caused me money problems was simple: nights out and the girlfriend.

I had a part time job working weekends. My loan covered the rent (barely) and my wages covered the bills and internet. Anything left covered weekly shopping and travel costs.

Now sticking to this simple plan was fine, but I would usually have about £50 per month to spend for myself. Now throw a couple of nights out a month and a girlfriend in the works and you’ve got a problem. Now you’re buying to cook for two and spending more money on travel to visit the girlfriend.

The average night out used to cost me about £30 including taxis, and that’s only assuming I didn’t withdraw more cash once I was plastered. So that means with the money I had spare, I could afford one night out and one cheap meal for two, per month.

It didn’t happen, and straight to the bank manager I went asking for the maximum overdraft. I got a job straight away once I graduated and I’ve managed to pay it all off in one month :)

What exactly are you saving for? If you don't like drinking and don't have a girlfriend, you shouldn't have too much to worry about.

Give up drinking.

If you smoke, give it up as well.
Blasphemy!
Spend saved money on booze and fags and in time you'll be drunk enough to think you're saving.

Seirously mate, big bags of pasta and rice are the way forward. Tinned tomatos and basil for the pasta, a bag of frozen peas for the rice, or a few onions, or a few eggs.
Maybe buy an economy loaf and fill will economy ham/ tuna, if you're feeling generous a tiny bit of cheap mayo.
Drink water instead of pop/ squash/ tea.

Tescos have an offer on beer I think it's 18 bottles of carlsberg export for £5, if you're anything like me beer is a neccesity.
