Bought new hdd, best way to move 30gig drive to 500gig drive

going for a 30 gig ide to a 500 gig sata - no qestion for me CLEAN install.... backup the 30gig and then copy what you need over after.

Nah i have too much in the registry and installed to mess up by doin a new windows install. As i would need to reinstall a bunch of games, applications, codecs and other crap. Just too much work so ill just clone it instead. No need really for new install anyhow only diff would mean its cleaner and just the default stuff from xp on it.

There's never need for a clean install unless the original is broken or REALLY slow as in neglected... Had to do a clean install myself a few times now ( XP pretty much died for gaming for me ( games crash/bsod), and vista first died due to a mobo change, then due to a hdd fail...) and tbh, I'd rather not do it again for at least 2 years, until windows 7 probably... Stuff just takes too damn long to get it running like you want it and to reinstall over 500 gb worth of games & apps...

Agree 100%

Acronis should recognize a SATA HDD if it has been formatted.

Has nothing to do with whether the HDD is formatted or not, it's whether it has the correct SATA controller drivers!

Disagree massively especially in this instance of IDE --> SATA!!
What if the new SATA drive is NCQ (AHCI), you won't be able to take advantage of this without serious headaches and workarounds within windows!! And even then it aint gonna work as well compared to if you were to set it up correctly before OS install, imho!

I didn't know about this !

But I still stand by my point, the speed difference is not worth the hassle of taking ages to config a new install...
I think I have AHCI disabled in bios actually :o. Or not, does anyone know what the P5B deluxe defaults to, as I'm using pretty much defaults except my ram settings and my sata controller is set to raid ?
