Budget it £2000, not a lot but enough to get you something good enough for a few track days.

Personally I have a lot of experience with Vauxhalls (Moan, boo, throw bottles of **** at me etc :) ) Could pick up a Corsa B, fit a 2l engine, upgrade the brakes and suspension and get change from £1500. Fairly nippy track toy that is easy to fix if something give or you damage the shell etc.

I'd like to look at other options so what would you get and why?

You can get a very decent 4th Gen Prelude VTEC for that money as well. If you hunt around for an import without 4WS there is not a lot to go wrong, try and find one with LSD as well! They have similar power and suspension to the Integra Type R and a lot of the extra weight can be removed as well!

Alternatively you could get a Metro already built into the VVC, however choosing a good spec, or a car that isn't rusty is tricky!

Another vote for a Pug 205 gti with either an Mi6 engine or 306 gti-6 engine in it. Strip it out and sort the suspension and brakes and you'll have a damn good track weapon with good power to weight ratio.

Granted it's not rwd but should be reliable and parts should be cheap as chips.

For a bit of a wild card laugh entry how about an Impreza Estate? There were a couple of twin turbo models on AT for £1500-£2000 which with a remap and weight strip might end up a barrel of fun. Decent power, 4wd and I'm sure you can strip the weight down a considerable amount.

MK1 MR2 or Mk1 Mazda MX5 MR from £500 MX5 from about £850?

These will be very very fun cars for the money.

Not really a "What would I have" as i've got it already :p

mk1 MR2. Car was free, spent about £500 on getting it up to MOT standard. Shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of a tatty looking MOTd car for similar money.

Strip off everything that doesn't do anything.

Replace suspension with something stiffer (Full set of KYBs will be about £200 plus springs or for £400ish can get koni adjustables with springs)

Ensure brakes are good, new discs, pads and refurb kits for calipers should come to £200-250ish if needed.

K&N plus nice stainless exhaust, again shouldn't be more than a few hundred particularly if you can get a 2nd hand exhaust. Not really necessary if you're being tight with the budget but it makes it sound nice and feel faster :p

Then you can spend the rest of your budget on 'nice to have but not essential' stuff like bucket seats and a smaller steering wheel.
