I noticed over on the PC forum that Fallout 3 is getting a rough time on the PS3 - something about poor framerate and visuals. Seems the finger points to the PC or Xbox as the favoured machines, with the PS3 coming in last.

Any thoughts... or set me straight?

The PC version of Fallout 3 is gorgeous. The colours are vivid, the draw distance is endless, the textures are high-res and the lighting effects are beautifully subtle, especially when you're gazing over the Capital Wasteland at sunset. It's the best-looking of the three.

The Xbox 360 version's textures are noticeably rougher than on PC, and objects in the distance aren't quite as clear. It does, however, boast an impressively solid frame rate. The game is, otherwise, identical.

NOW, the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox, but things in the distance are slightly jaggier/rougher, the textures seem 'muddier' up-close and the frame rate is choppier, especially during the last few story missions (which may be the same on Xbox, but we've not seen the equivalent scenes to comment). We won't spoil anything, but the set-pieces here are MASSIVE, and the engine quivers under the weight of what's happening.

So, really, the difference between the Xbox and PS3 versions won't hamper your enjoyment of the game in ANY WAY. High-res textures or not, it's still the same huge, epic, absorbing, brilliant adventure.

And if you're bothered by a slightly inferior frame rate and fractionally blurrier textures, then perhaps, yes, you'd best buy the Xbox version, leaving the rest of us to enjoy an almost-identical, equally brilliant, game on PS3, while you smugly inspect concrete textures at terrifyingly close range to reap the full benefit, rather than, say, losing yourself in a 100 hour epic quest in an evocative post-apocalypse. Or having fun.

Shame this has got some bad press, so early! Says it all when certain sites are still selling the fancy collectors edition PS3 versions, but not the xbox or PC ones.

So if you buy the version that they admit is better (albeit only slightly) then you are a loser?

I don't think it's a case of winning or losing. I own all three PS3 Xbox and PC, so from a totally unbiased, non fanboy stance, I find it interesting that PS3 has been singled out so early as a 'slightly' weaker version.

hrmm ok another reason to get a 360 (as well as for fable2 Gears2 and Last Remnant)

question is does it matter which 360 to get? Can i put in another HDD ?

I'm not bothered in the slightest by the weaker reviews. I've had my PS3 pre-order for many many months.

The thing that really does bother me is the fact that the engine has changed from FO1 and 2. Sure, I know that they are ten year old games, and times have changed, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)

Although the differences in 360vPS3 games are usually only for very picky people, the PS3 tends to get stick due to the promises that Sony made, about how the PS3 will change gaming with its super computer.
Not to mention the high number of pre rendered screens and videos of games that have made the final games look poor in comparison.
The only thing Sony has changed is the heights from which it takes a dump on its customer. If they'd left out Blu-ray and kept their mouths shut, there was probably room for both machines to be sold at the same price purely on which badge you prefer and each companies loyal followers.
Instead those who beleived the promises are made to pay for yet another high priced Sony Format that has nothing to do with gaming. Microsoft were the bad boy last gen, we just have to get used to Sony getting a lot of stick until the PS3 lives up to the hype. Later in its '10 year cycle' Sony tell us, and probably another couple of price cuts before we see true AAA games.

That's not what it's trying to say, what it's saying is if you're bothered by slight differences, get the 360 version, but if you can't, get the PS3 version or else you'll be losing out on a very good game.

I'll be getting this on the PC purely because of modding. The mods for oblivion turned it from an above average game to an utterly fantastic game, i can see this also being the case here.

What a load of Sony bashing nonsense. If the PS3 version is inferior then thats down to the developers of the game which happens to be a third party not Sony

Multi console releases are almost always better on the 360 as the PS3 needs more coding time to optimise which most companies don't do, but most likely you will have a great time whichever version you buy.

^^ This tbh

Both consoles are capable of pretty much the same thing, it just takes more effort to program for the PS3 if you're making a multi-platform title.

its annoying the way the ps3 gets little to no optimizing on multi-platform titles, if it was properly optimized it could reach very close to the pc version.
