For all you owners out there with the 4870 PowerColor 1gb card, whats the fastest/safest speed you have gotten out of your card using the ATI CCC Overdrive?? Is it ok just to use the Auto-Tune option?

For me on my 4850, the auto tune option was rubbish. It gave me whacked out clocks that couldn`t sustain gaming.

Successful overclockers clock the core first, then the memory. Clock the core 10% then game or run a benchmark, if all is well increase by 10mhz and so on until you have problems, then back off 20mhz. Then do the same with the memory.

If you want more, then you will have to up the voltage. Small increases can be made flashing the bios. After that you will have to pencil mod.

In regards to safety, don`t overclock. The manufacture has already deemed the appropriate clock settings, they know more than us ;)

Well in CCC, i was able to max the GPU clock out at 790MHz with no problems, had the Memory Clock at 1015MHz but got gfx glitches after 10 minutes of bench testing, so is now happy at 1010MHz. Is 790MHz for the GPU clock the fastest you can set it?

I got 780 gpu and 950 memory though i started to get issues in COD4, so have backed off now,

Now gpu 770 and memory at 900, what i should do is overclock gpu first to 780 or 790 and see what happens, also i have fan speed set to 40%

All seems a bit low to me???

yes^^

So, how are you liking your new gpu? Worth the upgrade? Did you see a difference in crysis or other game? ;)

well i would have liked better crysis performance i got like 10~15 fps more then mine 8800gts g92 512 mb. it has few problems but it will sort it self out i guess with new drivers.

image quality is better playing fps games for some reason i can see more clearly and play better maybe it is just sensation but who cares. in all other games fps is constant and smooth.

the fan is louder then 8800gts g92 but i did set it on 31/32% so it is quite now it just goes up when u turning pc of for a second.

looking forward to play far cry 2, l4d , cod:wow , gta 4 , nfs: undercover . and looking forward to 5870 ;)

I am glad your happy. I remember you was in Crysis Warhead thread saying negative things about the game and I told you it was your graphics card and you should try out a 4870. Well 15fps is a lot in a game like crysis, that's probably like a 100% increase in your case. You should be able to play that game everything maxed out now on dx9 mode easily. Just no AA. As for far cry 2, you can also do everything maxed with 4x AA also ;)

I find 4x AA is the sweet spot, gets rid of all visible jaggies. Anyone here see a difference from 4x to 8x AA? I mean there is a difference, but from 0XAA to 4XAA there is a huge difference, but from 4x to 8x AA, there is very little that you will see unless you stop and stare at least in games like far cry 2 and crysis anyways.

I think I will skip 5870 and build a new machine around 6870 or 480 GTX (if nvidia keep that naming scheme that is. lol. As usual, I will go for the card that has best price for performance, this time it was ATI. Last time it was nvidia. I hope PCIE-3 and USB 3 will be out by then also. I want a mobo that wont need upgrade in 6 months time because of these tecs coming in. Like with my current mobo, I got it and 4-5 months later pci-e 2 come out, kinda annoyed me. But I did get the mobo for a great price and its one of the best overclocking boards out there. So soon as those two tecs are out I will probably build a new pc then. I am guess that will be in about 18-24 months time. Which will be when something like the 6870 will be out ;)

Ok ill use Riva for OC, do i want the 'Apply Overclocking At Windows Start Up' and 'restore clock frequencies after suspended mode' ticked?? Is it ok to use te Far Cry 2 benchmark tool to stress test??

820/1010 at the moment, using far cry 2 benchmark 'Ranch Long', Temps according to Everest:

Core 58c (Fan Speed 35%)
Memory 72c
Shader 60c

How far can i push the GPU clock on these??

Seems 830/1010 is the highest i can go without getting any artifacts with ATITool, bit disappointed with the Memory clock OC, noticed now that my GPU clock doesnt spin down to 500MHz when idle, like it did before when view it in the CCC, any ideas?
