Could a recession be good for this country?

I've just been thinking - a lot of the social problems in this country, in my opinion, is because people have too much disposable income.

I'm 27, not particularly old, but when I was a teen, I didn't have enough money to go out and get plastered every night in the pub, at 16 I didn't have enough money for a scooter. Yes, in the last few years I've spent a hell of a lot of money on stuff, but it's all been earned.

I'm just thinking, if certain people's disposable income is reduced, would there be a benefit to society in general?

People may start to think twice before spending so much.

ps, yes I am mainly talking about chavs/ladettes etc etc!

I'd blame that sort of thing with credit card companies, so maybe if lending is reined in a bit then things might improve.

I'm probably wrong, but I think we need to import less cheap rubbish from China and be a bit more independent, I think a recession might help a bit.

It's going to be painful though.

Can't see it having an effect on chavs, they will still get money from benefits and if they can't afford it they will just nick it.

Your average joe working to keep food on the table will be the worst hit.

Indeed. We basically have no economy... The sooner we get some home grown industry or whatever going, the better.

No. Recession will not be good for decent hard working people. Almost everything we associate with normal life in the UK will be affected - right down to the quality of service we expect from companies (who due to cutbacks will no longer be able to provide the standards we are paying even more for)

It will probably be better for the layabouts, chavs etc as no doubt the gov. will try and win votes by increasing benefits in every way possible, at the same time implementing even more taxes, revenue, debt from normal families/ workers.

In my experience the underclass of this country have little regard for such matters. They will still gamble and drink and smoke and they will simply sell drugs and claim benefits and steal things to pay for it.

So, to answer your question, no, a recession won't be good for this country and the people you mention will remain completely oblivious to the whole thing.

People need to start buying what they can afford, not what they want.

Yeah thats true. A recession will probably do the most damage to familys on the lowest end of the economic scale, single mums etc. And no i dont think it will be good, however i get the point you are trying to make about teens drinking. For this their solution will be white lightning cos its cheap

You think a recession is the way forward from importing cheap goods rather than the more expensive method of manufacturing our own?

It won't affect them because the state handouts and refusal to punish them properly when they break the law will continue.

The country needs an overhaul at a fundamental level before "chavs" will start to behave properly.

I think we may see a full circle, recession means less spending on imports, which means less imports, costs per unit imported may well rise etc.

After the recession government incentives etc may well mean we could end up with a young manufacturing economy, if someone was brave enough. As long as we are not in recession nobody will give it a thought.

I recently got a job in distribution, I find it very disheartening when I see a container load of Corgi Toys, Hornby Train Sets etc arrive from China, the blasted things have travelled half way round the world, stored, distributed, marked up by the stores etc, surely we could and should be making them ourselves.

EDIT: I think I am trying to say, I think a recession may make us look again at the way our economy works and adjust to suit.

Grrr, house prices...... the government are trying to prop them up....... I suggest that is a mistake.

Absolutely love the recession tbh - cheap food, cheap petrol, cheap gas, cheap mortgage rates! :) Before this, I was struggling. Haven't noticed reductions in the job market either as I am applying for the many Christmas vacancies dotted about the place.
