I got a laptop dvd drive from the MM but when i fit it to the laptop windows no longer boots. I get to a screen saying 'operating system not found'.

Is this likely to be to be a compatibility issue between the laptop and drive? I have not tested the drive on a different laptop yet but will do so at the weekend.

Anyone seen an issue like this before?
The laptop works fine after putting the old CD-ROM drive back in.

How old is the laptop? what spec is it?

Have you looked in the BIOS to see what the boot order is?

PK!

Just made sure the boot order was HDD, floppy then drive, but no luck i just get the 'operating system not found message'

I also notice that when the DVD drive is in place the main BIOS page says there is no Primary Master or slave, where as with the CD-ROM drive it show my make of HDD.

Sounds like the jumper settings on the DVD are wrong.
Have a look on the back of the drive for a little jumper/ pins for one. Add or remove as appropriate and see where that gets you.
The model number for the DVD drive would also be helpful.

This is a laptop DVD drive and doesnt have any jumpers as far as i can tell.

The model number is UJ-840. Not sure of the manufacture google seems to point to it being Panasonic.

Had same problem with an old laptop once. The replacement dvd drive was set as the master even though it wasnt. It was due to the laptop connection configuration.

Solution was to short out two of the points (with solder) to force it to be recognised as a slave.

It was a common problem with that model of laptop and i found the guide to do it via google :)

Ive been searching but have had no luck. Any idea where you found the info?

Edit, where did you solder the two points? Inside the drive?

Cant remember sorry mate. The fix i did was specific for that particular laptop (toshiba one i think) and it envolved soldering 2 points on the adapter part that had to go onto the dvd drive for it to connect.

What is the exact make and model of the laptop?

Theres a link in post #3 which gives all the spec's on the laptop.

Ill keep looking thanks.

Oops sorry about that missed that post. Had a quick search and cant find anything either.

What the make and model number of the dvd drive?

Does it just plug in as standard or is a plastic adapter required to be fitted for it to connect to laptop properly?

I dont suppose you have access to another laptop so that you could try its drive on your and your drive on it?

Yup, tried the drive on another laptop and it worked fine. Yes it has got a little 'dongle' that i have to fix to get it to fit the laptop. The part number is UJ-840.

TBH i dont think im going to find a solution to this. It might be an idea for me to actually take the laptop to a parts seller and see if they will let me try a few different drives till i get one that is compatable.
