I've finally got it home. My 'winter' ride. Its getting a bit chilly, so I thought getting a cheap runabout would be a good idea for the winter. The Baja has no heating and isn't the kind of thing you'd want to use on a motorway more than you have to.
So, what better than a Golf GTI convertible to get my sorry ass to work and back.
A convertible. For winter. How foolish.
Ahh, or is it.
Its got a new, rain tight electric hood. So why not buy now, when convertible prices are at their lowest, and all everyone is thinking about is the credit crunch.
Anyhow, here is my new 'sensible'ish ride. Its a 1990 Golf GTI cabrio. I picked it up for £950.
Admittadely, there are a few problems. The main issues are a dodgey fuel pump and the gear stick / bushes were mis-aligned.
The gears are now fixed (took it to a local specialist), and the new fuel pump should turn up any time next week. It runs now, but its gurgling a lot and sometimes cuts out.
The drivers door hinge is a bit worn and the door doesn't line up very well, plus there are a few patches of rust coming through. The bumpers aren't on very well and the back bumper has some paint coming off (fixed with black tape
) plus there are a few bits of primer showing through here and there.
However, for the price I'm reasonably satisfied. Next spring I'll treat the body to some professional care, however for the meantime some black hammerite should prevent it going any further. (I've had plenty of experience with the Baja).
