Hi,

I've just upgraded the memory in my macbook to 4GB from overclockers.

How do i find out if I can use the 2GB that i have just taken out of my macbook in my other laptop? (its an Acer Aspire Travelmate 1680). The macbook memory is 2 x 1GB sticks of PC2 5300.

Cheers.

It will work fine providing the Acer is DDR2.

Use CPU-Z to find out if it has DDR or DDR2.

OK, I had a look at the acer last night and the memory currently inside it came back with the following details. Does this mean my old macbook memory won't work in this laptop????

This is the stuff in your 'other laptop' correct? If so, you won't be able to use your old Macbook's RAM in it. The macbook was using DDR2, this is - as you can see bolded and underlined - only DDR.

Ok cheers. 1 more thing then. If i want to buy some more memory for it, am i just looking for some DDR notebook memory then? Is the speed important (do faster speeds just get throttled back and work fine)? do i need to have matched pairs? etc.

I just had a quick look on overclockers website but can't find any on there? it all seems to be DDR2 and DDR3 for notebooks.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please? i'd even be happy to get some from the MM 2nd hand if the price is right etc.

In fact if anyone knows of a good article that explains the basics and whats compatible with what that would be great too.

Cheers

Matched pairs aren't 100% necessary, but just to be safe they are a good idea to try and have.
I'd google the name and make of your laptop and try and find a detailed spec of what sort of DDR speeds it can handle. Each motherboard is different y'see.
