Getting a bit concerned with the PWM1 (northbridge) temps on my mobo, around 80-85c under load, and is holding back from getting 3.6GHz out of my Q6600. So am thinking of adding a fan to the heatsink, what size fan do i need, 80mm??, how do i secure it to the heatsink. Is there anything else i can try to get the temps down??

hmmm, thats an option i guess, but i would like something permanently on the northbridge, so what size fan do i need?, or is there custom made northbridge fans?

Yeah was looking at that, but just noticed that my massive CPU heatsink will be in the way, and because of the IP35 Pro 3 piece heatpipe, i dont think i can easily use 3rd party heatsinks on the mobo

PWM isn't the northbridge, it's the power circuitry section up by the top l/h corner of the board by the I/O section.
Google for the bolt mod. edit: see that you've found a thread here about it.

Ah, my mistake.... So the heatsink in the red circle below is the PWM then...

..with green northbridge and yellow southbridge?? Cant see and easy way to add a fan to the PWM then really, and by the sounds of it it wouldnt help as its due to either the thermal pad not making proper contact or the heatsink not seated correctly??

Yeah red is the PWM heatsink.

Do the bolt-mod first.

The PWM's are meant to run hot anyway. Below 100c is safe.

Should i go for applying new paste and re-seating or will the bolt mode do the job do you think, also what length M3 screws do i need is 10mm long enough, as i will be adding rubber washers to the underside to stop shorts

oh extra airflow over that area will help lower the temps.

yeah but dont have a clue where i could mount a fan at the back there, as i have the rather large, Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler

Not long enough. You'll need atleast 25mm long. And yeah you'll need nylon washers to place between the bolt and the motherboard.

Arctic Silver 5 will be fine for the north and south bridges. The PWM's have a thermal pad that can be re-used (tho I removed it and used MX-2 on the PWMs. It's unconductive, unlike AS5).

Bloody hell i would have though 25mm would have been way too long. I was looking at the plastic/nylon washers, but thought that they might scratch break the circuits on the under side of the mobo, so thays why i thought of rubber washers. How tight do i need to tighten the screws, just until i start to feel a bit of resistance on the screwdriver??

25mm is only an inch. I not sure if 10mm would even reach the holes in the heatsink, especially with a washer attached.

Personally I'm using 40mm bolts on mine.

Nylon washers are grand (I've used them for years).

And yeah just tight enough to feel a little resistance.
