Can anyone explain the purpose of the trade in value section in Parkers guides if all traders use Glass's guides?

You look in Parkers, it tells you a trade in value of your car, then you go to a dealers and they consult their Glass's guide and offer you way less than Parkers said.

Am I just missing something?

Parkers does have a vaguely useful review section, and also has specifications like kerb weights listed for cars.
As for values, I wouldn't put any value on any guide. My view being that people will only pay what they're willing to pay, and the best guide for that is by having a look at autotrader for a similar car.

parkers is a joke. Sometimes customers come in and think it is gospel. The market at the moment is in complete turmoil. We are retailing cars for below parkers trade-in value for that car.

Look at them as Rolling Roads in paper form, pretty much a best guess that can be accurate or miles off based on conditions.

These are Parker's prices for my M3

Private Good £14,795

Part Exchange £14,330

best p/ex offer I has was £13,500 , lowest 11,350

and sold private for £13k

so these are way over

The idea is in the title '...Guide'. Glass's is the same, the traders will consult it, but ultimately they'll decide on vaules depending on their own requirements/factors.

At the end of the day, something is only worth as much as someone is prepared to pay for it, regardless of what these guides state.

I went to see an RX8 this morning and I don't think the garage wanted to sell it as they didn't exactly try hard. They let me look around it, but wouldn't let me drive it cos they said it might get dirty

Needless to say I walked away.

I always hear stories like this. I've never came across a sales person that bad! If you would like to buy a car come see me. I will be more than happy to take your cash!

If you are earning enough comission to drive a Lambo I bet you take plenty of cash!

I couldn't believe it either. How do they expect to sell a car like an RX8 without letting anyone drive it? The engine is marmite and not everyone is going to like it, how on earth am I supposed to find out whether I like the engine or the way it drives if I can't try it out?

Take a drive with me one day around 4 or 5 car lots and I am sure we'll find 1 or 2...

Most car salesmen appear to be clueless numpties - which makes it all the more amusing when:

a) People are suprised
b) People give any credibility to that line 'I know what I'm talking about, I am in the trade'

We dont expect washing machine sales assistants to be experts so I dont know why we expect the same of car salesmen..

The type of sales person you all speak about wouldnt last 5 minutes where I work. Dont get me wrong the job attracts some absolute lunatics but they all want to make money.

It's a shame because occasionally you come across absolutely great sales staff. I'm sure you are one of them. But then normally the great salesmen have a crap sales manager :(

the top salesman in my group is quite rude, reasonably obnoxious and has a case of small man syndrome but deals over 50% of the people he speaks to.

Some of the really nice guys in the industry can sell the customer the car but cant close them and therefore customers end up buying the same car from someone else as they were closed properly.
