uni degree... enjoy it?

big help guys, engineering is high on the agenda if i do choose another path, civil engineering a favourite, however I am still researching the matter. Maths, Physics etc I have always done well in hence the attraction to me.

I'm the type of guy that prefers being outside hands on, not stuck in an office behind a desk, ironic i know, choosing to go into IT, but then again there are plenty of field engineering/technical jobs in IT, these are the ones that interest me.

good job i have lots of free time in my current job to research all this :p

Blackstar, that actually sounds really interesting! surprised!

What you studying and where to?
Studying Digital Forensics & System Security at Coventry University

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Enjoying it immensely. my classes are interesting, my lecturers are great.

Meet your expectations?
Met and exceeded.

what career you aiming for?
ethical hacker / white-hat-hacker.

How you finding the financial side of things?
i'm haemmoraging money :(

Any regrets?
None whatsoever.

What you studying and where?
HND in Biomedical Science, UWIC

Enjoy it or not? Why?
At the moment its alright, im not living up there so commute is annoying and also im not as social with other people there as they all live together now know each other really well

Meet your expectations?
Pretty much what I was expecting, only had 1 assignment which most people will think is great, but not having work thats marked and so on means i dont know if im progressing well with the course or not

What career you aiming for?
Biomedical Scientist in NHS or after doing the HND I may jump onto the Paramedic Science course to be a paramedic I'll see if im still enjoying the course after 2 years before heading onto the degree

How you finding the financial side of things?
As the HND is only 2 days a week(although they are long days), I currently can work 2 other days a week where I work, plus I have the loan on top and a grant, so money isnt so much a problem atm

Any regrets?
Should have studied A level biology rather than do a stupid BTEC in Applied science. Because of this I have to do a HND with the possibility of jumping onto the 3rd year of degree, depends on my grades, otherwise I will have to go from the 2nd year of the degree.

Also wish I wanted to do this when I was 18(23 now) so I would have graduated by now instead of starting my first year.

What you studying and where?
Archaeology at Edinburgh (3rd year)
Enjoy it or not? Why?
I'm absolutely loving it this year. The course is fantastic, the lecturers are very good and the lectures are involving and interesting. The subjects i choose are just brilliant, human origins, human and animal remains, underwater archaeology and isotopes in archaeology.
Meet your expectations?
It has exceeded them, i had very little expectation of the course to begin with as i didn't really know what i was letting myself in for.
What career you aiming for?
Hopefully something to do with archaeology either in the field or otherwise
How you finding the financial side of things?
Very very difficult, although my fees are paid for me i get very little else.
Any regrets?
None at all, i've made great friends, having a good time and doing what i what to do.

I've always wondered about Archaeology...As I do love watching programs on it normally.

What you studying and where to?
Computer Science with a year in Industry at The University of Kent

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Im in my 4th year now, and i must admit this year isnt as good as i was hoping. but i blame that on a great placement year at HP.
first and second years where great though.

Meet your expectations?
Cant say i had any expectations of the course before i got on it. but it seems fairly standard compared to others around the country.

What career you aiming for?
Maybe software development, or systems engineering to some level.

How you finding the financial side of things?
im doing alright, i get the full loan and a 1k grant plus i get my tuition fees paid for me. i managed to save about 3k from my placement year. so that is what is keeping my head above water this year. the accomidation at Kent is rather a lot. about £70 less than the max loan, and im not even in the swanky places (ie shared kitchen/bathroom etc)

Any regrets?
Nope.

Thanks :)

What you studying and where to?

Electrotechnical installation at Capenhurst College Cheshire

Enjoy it or not? Why?

Bit hit and miss at the moment as we're doing health and safety but we also do practical work which is great fun especially when you have great people to work with and good tutors (tutors are leaving soon though :<)

Meet your expectations?
Exceeded them imo, teachers are very good at what they do but as they are leaving soon im very skeptical about the new ones.

What career you aiming for?

Electrician and maybe work myself up to something higher, but hopefully i want to be an industrial electrician at the end of the course.

How you finding the financial side of things?

Train 3 day's a week for 15 mins is a breeze and i had the course payed for me so its not all that bad.

Any regrets?

Not having as much money as i used to but i get over it considering i only go in 3 days a week and i have saved up enough to last me a while.

It's not really a Degree but i put as much hard work into it as my mate's do at their uni courses so im very happy with what im doing.

Blackstar, that actually sounds really interesting! surprised!
I get to play with 16th century skeletons (from our teaching collection), how cool is that! I get to find out about perfectly preserved bronze age organic material in submerged sites and the origins of the genus homo (i.e. humans) in the East African Rift Valley. I could go on about it all day. It isn't for everyone but i adore it.

Fonzee, engineering CAN be office based, but it can be so much more.
Could be in a nuclear submarine, or working on a huge Dam, or on a car production line (as an engineer not actually working on the line).

Designing jobs for engineering are usually office based, but the field of engineering is so vast it can be pretty much anything you want it to be:)

What's it like studying law at Bristol?

Good. I'm enjoying it quite a bit although I find the jump from science to law extremely frustrating because everything I have relied on to make me a good student simply doesn't help me any more.

My course is essentially the undergraduate course condensed into 2 years. So it could be fair to say I have 1.5x the undergraduate workload - either way I'm struggling to juggle work amongst other things. Which is why you rarely see me on OCUK anymore.

I have only been studying for a few weeks, so its quite hard for me to comment.

thing is, i did a BTEC in IT instead of A levels during college, so that will no doubt be held against me in terms of the mathmatics and science involved with an engineering course. is my only option to do a course with a foundation year?

If you haven't got A levels in maths and physics, you'd definitely need a foundation year to get onto a decent course. It'd be worth it though.:)

I'm sortof looking foward to Uni sort of not... I'll love the social aspect but I have serious motivation issues in making myself work... plus I've got no idea what to do. Cambridge/Oxford are very much possibilities, but course wise? No idea :/

Expected straight As in Maths, Physics, Geography, Computing and then will be doing Futher Maths AS in second year.

I've just got no idea what I want to do... working for an F1 team or the like sounds awesome to me, doing aerodynamics or the like.... but I'm not sure. Initially I was thinking of doing a pure maths degree but where the hell does that put me in places for a job? I don't know!

So, questions...

What you studying and where to?

IT Management @ Southampton University

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Love it, I get to research bleeding edge stuff, the staff all really know their stuff and obviously I love the student life.

Meet your expectations?

Met and exceeded.

What career you aiming for?

Network management although I've just sent a CV for a Penetration Tester

How you finding the financial side of things?

I work as well as going to uni for 10 hours a week. I manage to do the things I want to do and run a car. I'm not loaded but I'm happy.

Any regrets?
Not sure. Maybe I should have stayed with CompSci, but I suppose the grass is always greener. I'm not really someone who does much regretting anyway.

I'd recommend a good engineering course. Look out for courses that allow you to specialise in your 2nd/3rd year whilst covering all disciplines at first. That'll allow you to really decide what you're interested in. I started out wanting to do mechanical/fluids but now I want to do electronics instead.

I know Cambridge, Oxford and Durham all do courses like this, and they're all well-regarded. They're also all very maths-based which might be your thing if you're thinking about doing pure maths as well.

Just been to Durham uni myself (for a weekend not as in just left) and its is a really good Uni, both my sisters are going there. Its often considered one of the Third Uni's behind Cambridge and Oxford and beats the top two in quite a few courses. Really nice city. its very similar to york, just a smaller version. Plenty of nightlife and the same time and plenty of decent people without having to compensate with plenty of Chavs :)

Engineering is the one thing that keeps popping up, but I, without having researched it much, am unaware as to the eventual prospects. Obviously you get into a well paid job with a good company...but is there room to expand from there? Would very much like to oneday run my own company, and I wasn't certain if that was the sort of degree that could branch in that fashion.

What you studying and where to?
Accounting at University of Liverpool

Enjoy it or not? Why?

It's ok. Five years (inc two years of college subjects based around Accounting) can start to knock the enjoyment in any subject. I think the whole education/exam way of marking performance is getting annoying.

Meet your expectations?
In the course or in the uni?

What career you aiming for?
Accounting. Specifically tax accounting for KPMG. Hope to work my through another two years of exams after Uni to get dual qualification in ICAS (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland) and CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser). I'm applying for an Investment Consultant position as well though.

How you finding the financial side of things?
Crap. The system sucks. Yet again I get stuck with the rich families whos parents pay for their fees, buy them a car, etc while my parents work a combined 100 hour weeks so I get £0 grants.

Any regrets?
Maybe in one or two module choices, more so the work I done at college but I can't really say I've done anything I could have done better with at Uni.

Basically im 20, worked last 2-3 years in IT support, which i find unexciting and unchallenging so time for a change. Always regretted not going Uni so now seems the perfect opportunity to go. I either do a specialised subject in IT and aim towards a different path in the industry, or try something completely new. :)

So, questions...

if you want to go wait till you hit 21, then show the council that you funded yourself, you'll get a full grant no matter how much yoru parents earn.
