uni degree... enjoy it?

Not sure if I count because I didn't stay for long but I'll answer anyway.

What you studying and where to?
Derby - Computer Games Modelling and Animation

Enjoy it or not? Why?
I didn't enjoy the course and soon found out it wasn't for me, but for anyone interested in this career then it's definitely something to look into. It's run by ex-industry geeks (motorstorm art director) so they know what they're on about.

As for the social life it was absolutely amazing, I really miss it and hated leaving it.

Meet your expectations?

Yup, very expensive, but very fun.

What career you aiming for?

Management of some sort.

How you finding the financial side of things?

Very hard, everything costs so much and although you hear of all these student nights and discounts, you'll soon find places charging you £3+ for one drink. Very VERY expensive. And that's just the social side, nevermind the books and trips you have to pay for.

Any regrets?

Leaving. I didn't like the course but I regret leaving the social side behind and living on my own, it was great having such independence.

I looked at that course funnily enough...I did apply for it, but I believe my lack of grades and A levels didn't help my cause.

If you haven't got A levels in maths and physics, you'd definitely need a foundation year to get onto a decent course. It'd be worth it though.:)

Thats the problem iam having trying to get into lse 18K, for 2 year post grad course, and i dont have A level maths, so doing HE pure maths and advance maths.
The worst thing i hate maths, already have stats enjoyed it, however pure maths well thats another issue, finding it boring but something i need to do.

if you want to go wait till you hit 21, then show the council that you funded yourself, you'll get a full grant no matter how much yoru parents earn.

interesting, this was what i was on about earlier, 'independant student' etc, what sort of proof is required do you know? and what council is that? local? :)

my 'rents won't be helping me out at all so i need to check this option out!

All you need to do is show them that you've supported yourself, as you've been working for 3 years thats seen as self support, plus if your 21 you'll have a better chance of a) getting funding b) getting into a good uni as a mature student.
yep your local council.

Yeh its pretty good, get plenty of support to take what I knew as a hobby further. Was a very nice break from more tradition subjects during A level.

Meet your expectations?
Yeh pretty much

What career you aiming for?
The Games Industry - But I'd be happy if I ended up falling back into IT which is what I've been doing over the summers

How you finding the financial side of things?
Cope fine, really don't understand how some people end up massively in there overdraft so quickly. I've fully upgraded my pc every year, plus I bought a expensive camera a few weeks back. Just work over the holidays and it easily balances out so long as you don't waste it by living off of takeaways and go out every other night.

Any regrets?
Looking back a lot of the things I learnt I could have found elsewhere, plus I could be earning a tidy wage in IT by now. But on the other hand I've got the experience of Uni :)

plus not sure what others think i found alevels harder than a degree, but then again i carried on doing a degree that was directly related to my alevels.
So my theory is if you do an Alevel and you enjoy it plus you gain high grades then you should carry on with it at degree, but then again got a 1st in my first year and 3rd in my second/ 4year giving me a 2.2 over all. messed up big time.

I did my Degree (BSc Computing and Networks) and to be honest really should have spent the 4 years doing MS abnd CISCO qualifications instead.

What you studying and where to?
Computing at Greenwich
Enjoy it or not? Why?
I am very much enjoying it regardless of the uni's reputation the teachers are very good as is the course conent.
Meet your expectations?
Yep
What career you aiming for?
In my first year i wanted to be a programmer..now into my second year i am studying more about databases which is quite interesting so maybe a Database Administrator or Designer.
How you finding the financial side of things?
Im living at home which saves a fair bit of cash , i also work part time and have a student loan so am quite well off compared to most students :D
Any regrets?
No not really .

Nitefly as an LPC student who completed an LLB, I'm interested to know why you choose to do an MA in Law instead of the CPE and then the BVC?

In terms of the OP. I'm studying my LPC at Cardiff, it's a great city but I find the course dull.

What you studying and where to?
Foundation engineering at UWE

Enjoy it or not? Why?
No, Its not a course I wanted to do but had to do it to get onto the course I do want (music systems engineering). Personally not a fan of "student life" either

Meet your expectations?
I had very few expectations but pretty much no

What career you aiming for?
I don't honestly know, something in audio/electronics which I might vaguely enjoy I guess

How you finding the financial side of things?
This is a big downer for me. I dislike spending when I'm not earning and miss my income more than I thought (was working 2 years previous to coming here)

Any regrets?
Oh yeah, if I thought I could get a half decent job back home I'd be out of here in a flash but alas I am stuck for now :(

Honest opinion though probably not held by many so don't let it put you off too much :)

thanks :) will look into.

how you finding Stafford? seems to offer a very diverse range of IT subjects in comparison with everyone else. Hows the social life etc?

You got a lot of replies but I thought Id put my 2 cents in!

What you studying and where to?
Computer and Network Tech at The University of Hertfordshire

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Love it, times when I feel pretty down and just want to give up studying but I couldnt imagine doing anything else.

Meet your expectations?
The course itself was a little basic in first year and not overly network orientated. That was 3 years ago now and they have changed the course quite a bit.
The staff always seem to have the time to listen, the technology is top notch and there's plenty of support and advice available.
Socially it has gone above and beyond what I could ever imagine.

what career you aiming for?
Something in network design or management but I love all areas of technology so would be willing to do support for a few years and see where it goes.

How you finding the financial side of things?
Before coming to Uni everyone always talks about the money, and a lot of people use it as an exscuse not to come. To be honest thats rubbish.

Yeah I've got a lot of debt, but it's not normal debt, I dont lie awake at night worried that my belongings are going to get repo'd the next day! I did a placement year so I had a year of earning as well which is making this last year a bit easier.

It's really not as bad as people make out if you're sensible.

Any regrets?
Not really, I didnt get into my first or second choice, so I guess I should have worked harder at A-Level, but now Im here I'm glad of what happened, 6th form taught me a lot about being me and being with other people....so no, no regrets.

If you want to talk more about it email or msn me (in trust)

What you studying and where to?

Computer Science at Cambridge

Enjoy it or not? Why?

Yes and no. This is only my third week here, and while it's good to be learning again the workload is seriously high. Free time is a thing of the past.

Meet your expectations?

So far pretty much.

What career you aiming for?

Software development of some kind.

How you finding the financial side of things?

No problems so far.

Any regrets?

Not doing Further Maths at A-Level. It seem's nearly all the freshers doing sciences did Further Maths, except me. On the other hand if I had done Further Maths I would have had fewer free periods during A-Levels to work on my system and control project, and while I don't want to sound arrogant it's something I'm very proud of and glad I did; I wouldn't have been able to do it if I'd done Further Maths

Further maths would just have made my first term easier. I was lucky to get in without it really, but they shoved the entire A level FM syllabus into my head in about a month, which was intense.

I wish I'd worked for 6 months and gone traveling for 6 months after that. I just hear so many people talk about how amazing it is.
Wow, another Cambridge scientist/engineer who didn't do Further Maths! I think that's what they're doing to me atm, shoving the whole syllabus into my head in a month :(

Regarding gap years I don't regret not taking one because I've had a taster of travelling from doing a one month team challenge expedition last summer (2007) - which I seriously enjoyed - this had the benefit of not delaying me going to university; I think if I had done I would struggle to get my head back into learning mode.

I also did a one month Team Challenge. It was doing that which made me want to do a proper year abroad.:p

Everyone says the workload gets harder and harder, but it didn't for me. The first term was by far the hardest. You get used to the work as well, which helps.

You're at Fitz yeah? I met some of your first year girls on Thursday.;)

What you studying and where to?
Network Management and Security

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Truthfully not really, i love the industry side (work experience) but the uni stuff is rubbish just want it to be over now. For example current course work is php. I will never touch php again it needs to be more relevant to industry which it is not.

Meet your expectations?
No but something you usally have to do if you want a better job/career (not always true)

What career you aiming for?
Network Manager job offered. However am really considering doing PGC next year

How you finding the financial side of things?
AMAZING - Scholarship i get EVERYTHING paid for as long i maintain a 65% average.

Any regrets?
So far no however if i was to fail this final year it would be 3 years regret

What you studying and where to?
Mathematics at the University of East Anglia

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Yes, because I'm learning about something I've always been interested in and naturally enjoy. Though, compared to a lot of my friends' courses, mine seems a little.. "heavy"--as in I often find myself with a coursework deadline to meet while the others are out having fun.

Meet your expectations?
On the whole, yes. Although my Pure Mathematics module is a lot more difficult than I expected it to be, and I know a lot of others here share my view here.

What career you aiming for?
I have absolutely no idea at the moment. One step at a time! I'm doing this degree because I enjoy learning Mathematics not because I want to pursue a career in it necessarily.

How you finding the financial side of things?
Things are a little tight at the moment; my wallet's a little unhappy with my N96 and OcUK 12" Titan Mobile, but these were much needed items! Seriously though, there's no way I could survive without my part time job which brings me £300 a month because my maintenance loan/grant leaves me with a whopping £10-per-week to live on. Although, due to my A-level results, I should be receiving scholarship money soon which I'm apparently eligible for.

Any regrets?
Don't end up like this ;)

Yes, that's a skirt, and I still haven't managed to get that permanent marker off...

Know your limits, kids!

interesting, is there a search function in UCAS or another site which would tell me which unis offer what scholarships? :)

thanks for all the input so far, appreciated.

What you studying and where to?
BSc in Forensic and Crime Scene Science

Enjoy it or not? Why?
Yeah, some very varied subjects which means it's a challenge. You end up with a fairly broad knowledge by the end of the course. Things like Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Archaeology, also Criminal Law, Biochemistry, Major Incident and Management, Toxicology, Forensic Biomolecules.

Meet your expectations?
Mostly, some areas are indepth, others aren't. Some things will be useful and others wont.

What career you aiming for?
Any sort of science based career really. Forensics is pretty tough to get into.

How you finding the financial side of things?
Loans for living, and course. Everything else (read 'food, alcohol and clothes') from a part time job.

Any regrets?
I regret not going for a Chemistry or Biology degree. But this is keeping me interested so far.
