Why, all of a sudden, are people going mental over this brand? A brand, from what I can tell, is aimed at golfers? Everywhere I seem to look I see that damn golden bird logo on an *insert pastel colour here* jumper.

Is this the height of cool nowadays and I've missed the boat? Not that I would buy it anyway just to be 'in' (plus they're extortionately priced), but can someone tell me why they seem to be the 'must have' item at the moment?

I thought society (well except for chavs with their need to be recognised by their brand - Burberry Caps, MACKENZIE shirts etc) was past buying items purely on the strength of a brand? I'm aware many people will buy the same Topman/River Island stuff, but surely a cardigan from there is the same as one from L&S but costs half the price? I guess it's that 'cool' logo?

In fact, no, scrap that last point. I can see why people would buy designer - to get items which make them different as it's not an 'off the rack' item. Exclusivity. However, surely this point is moot when you're buying designer golfing jumpers, with a gaudy bright logo, which makes you look more similar to others due to them wearing the same.

I actually don't care about fashion but would say I dress quite well. The reason I am asking, is on seeing a group of guys (presumably going for a night out in Nottingham city) all wearing a L&S jumper (one in a cardigan), I just wanted to know what the big deal was.

So you can impress someone with how much money you've spent, making you obviously well endowed.

...that and being individual, just like everyone else.

EDIT: I never owned Adidas poppers :(

For me the Lyle and Scoot craze was well over a year ago but its popularity has again been revived, why I don't know.

I own one Lyle and Scott t-shirt, it's very good quality and well fitted.

Back when I bought my shirt I wasn't earning much and it kind of showed others what you could afford, maybe the fact that it demands a higher rrp than many other clothes is the attraction?

I owned a pair of poppers I think, back in the mid-90's, good times. I was just saying the other day everyone's sporting, 'Lyle & Scott', my dad agree'd.

Lyle & Scott, Fred Perry and Jack Wills. All over priced cack that people still buy because it's got the logo.

Or probably the worst example... Stone Island, with its arm label.

That used to be quite good years back. Now you only ever see chavs wearing it.

I have a big collection of designer clothing from the likes of Burberry, etc. which I wouldn't ever wear again now. Damn chavs. :(:o

Jack Wills is extortionate - they do have some really nice clothes but I wouldn't pay RRP for them, luckily my girlfriend works there so I get a healthy chunk of discount!

Wouldn't be buying it otherwise, well not on my current wages anyway.

L&S went out a while back for golfers unless your over a certain age, it's more J Lindeberg, Boss or William Hunt for the trendier golfer, or Adidas/Nike for the golfer who wants to look like a tour player! :)

Its the old Hooligan chic look that started with the casuals in the 80's

Lyle and Scott, Sergio Taccini, Retro Adidas, Fred Perry.....................

Lyle and Scott were all the rage back in the early 80s
My dad gave me a couple of Lyle and Scott jumpers from about 25 years ago, still nice jumpers but I wouldn't wear them, the trend height is too big.

I reckon in 06-07 the trend was having an All Saints polo/jumper/cardigan, and 07-08 just shifted towards Lyle & Scott, wonder what the next one'll be?

God knows, I hate it when a brand gets so common. They do some nice stuff but thats ruined by the image of every guy and his dog wearing it on a night out. If it wasn't for the very distinctive logo it wouldn't be half as popular. Im liking the J Lindeberg polo tops atm, a little more discreet.

What Tate divorced Lyle and Lyle is now shacked up with Scott. Oh no, I thought this was about something important like sugar. ;)

lots of people like their clothes to show how expensive they are, quite randomly I get told it a lot at work, because one of the doors I work is opposite the entrance to Harvey Nichols Brasserie, with their fairly exclusive dress code, so I get a lot of people saying how much their tshirt or coat cost and moaning about how they should be able to get in because they spent so much on their clothes. It seems to be more working class types, labourers etc who obviously want to make the big distinction between what they wear for work and what they wear out
