What is the realistic difference between the two when gaming? Would I see a big enough difference with the E8600 to warrant the extra 60 odd quid spent?

Please don't get technical, i've got a big enough headache from little sleep and too much work. A simple yes or no would do.

The E8400 really is a good cpu even at stock speeds, so if you decide to overclock it I've read reports of it hitting some good speeds. If I were you I'd get the E8400 and buy a better graphics card, as you say.

Yeah it's a great chip, from my experience they overclock really well, definitely the choice to make over the E8600.

E0 is the most recent revision so it should keep cooler and need less volts but thats a fairly genral statement.

Ive got a E8400 clock it to the speed of an 8500/8600 you cant loose!

E0 fixed a few errata, slightly faster, higher thermal profile, lower VID's generally. Should on average have more headroom. No reason not to get one they're in the stream if you look.

Ordered an E8400 with some other bits from OcUK last week, was an old July batch Q820 so returned it via the distant sellers act.

I've looked high & low for an E8400 E0 to no avail in the UK. :(

Can get one in Europe no problem but I cannot sort an EU Bank Transfer I work 7:30am till 7:30pm at the moment so its a struggle. :(

I did a little forum search on google and manged to source one in the uk for just over £100. They are out there. I got the e-tailer to do a physical check as well as it wasnt listed on their webby.

So did I, same money as above, they're out there.

Bleh I feel so stupid, I remember ringing around for an E6850 Week 19B (4ghz chip) Stepping last year & managing to source one.

Just browsed the web for an E8400 E0, thought never crossed my mind to ring a few retailors up, managed to source one today should have it tommorow. :)

Some retailors give their customers time & check for you, the bigger you are the less you care I guess.
