Well this whole thread's a lie. CERN developed the internet for means of sharing information, the americans made it public knowledge.

I thought they (TBL) invented the World Wide Web? I thought the internet was developed by the yanks to communicate during a nuclear war. I am, however, probably wrong.

EDIT: I appear to be correct!

I thought DARPA invented the communication between computers (ARPANET). They did this to create a de-centralised network.

Berners-Lee (at CERM) did invent the "World Wide Web", ie. the Hypertext Markup Language along with TCP/IP.

So the yanks invented the comms, we invented a way to interface with it.
