At night - when going to bed and all is quiet - driving me potty!

Sounds like a PC with a loud fan left on in the back bedroom - constant.

I've switched off all electrical items in the house and been around top to
bottom but the sound is always there!

arrrrgh!

I really didn't want to post this link but, well, there ya go

Flick the main breaker off at the fusebox and see if it really is something electrical or not.

This was on the news not too long ago. I forget where it was but after various investigations no obvious source of the hum was ever found...

I get this problem sometimes, it drives me crazy, I've even turned the main electric off and it's still there at times, I've always been sensitive to sound and vibrations though, I know this is going to sound crazy but when I'm relaxed lying in bed at night I can actually physically feel a lot of noises, you know like some people do when people scratch their nails on a chalk board, well it's a bit like that but I get it with normal everyday sounds varying in degrees depending on the frequency of the noise, it can be quite annoying sometimes at night.

I got confused by a high pitched whine the other day, realised that when my monitor is off (as in power cable in, switched on at the wall, but off on the button) it makes a noise. So now I unplug it when it's not in use. It doesn't do it when it's on or in Standby, just when turned off. :/

How weird you should mention this, when I went to bed last night I heard a humming noise too, however I was that tired I just fell asleep quickly.

Have you tried also turning off all mobile phones in house? And did you unplug your landline phone as this will operate of the phone line not mains power?

I have found sometimes my phone can operate with a strange sound at night.

I would otherwise suggest you get some sound testing equipment to show you are going crazy :P

Were you alone in bed?

Yes I was, the only other person was our 8 month old son, and he wasn't emitting any humming noises. :D

I've turned just about evrything off - the things that should make a hum (house alarm, fridge etc) I can go up to and can hear the separate distinct sound. But The Hum I can hear at the same volume and pitch all over the house from the kitchen, dining room, every bed room to the loft room. So it can't even be outside as the volume/pitch would change as I went from the back of the house to the front.

It's weird, that's for sure.
