I hope this don't start a flame war, but after a year on a Mac and having lost touch with the OS wars, I'm curious as to the current optimal platform for Windows gaming. I've bought a PC and are about to buy either Vista or XP, so I need some advice. I know the Vista has DX10, but what I don't know is how big the difference is in terms of visuals and gaming in general. I do remember XP being very good and optimized, but I've read bad report after bad report of Vista.

So, what do you reckon?

Edit: I should add, this PC will purely be for gaming. Everything else I'll do on the Mac.

look gamer or not, i think its time to move to vista, gaming in itself is now very capable and the times were there was a massive gap in reg to performance for both xp and vista, now there is very little, and in some cases more performance gained if in vista.

dx10 is just starting to get efficient , there is no reason to stick with xp any more if your a gamer in my opinion.

One thing I did pick up recently is that Vista doesnt universally support all games, quite a few dont work (just like when XP came out) so if you do have older games you still want to play you may want to check.

Obviously thats not going to sway your decision, just thought youd might like to know.

And by older I mean something like Max Payne not Pac Man :p...

I'm perfectly happy with Vista, I've not experienced any headaches and performance seems fine.

If somebody was asking whether they should upgrade from XP to Vista I'd probably say its not really worth bothering, but if you're buying one or the other I'd say Vista.

I went from XP to vista to vista 64 then back to XP

Vista is just a resource hog if you ask me and im not suprised microsoft have ditched it already

it could be seen as a resource hog if you have not got much resources.

someone who has a very fast system with all the resources to throw at vista, then its vista that will make use of it more than xp will.

vista has better memory management, its more efficient, and is a lot slicker.

im no fan boy, it took me a while to move over.

i wont be going back to xp that's for sure., and after a month of vista usage, you wont either

Define how many resources you would consider to run Vista well? I presume 4Gb Ram and a C2D...

Windows ME - now thats an OS that everyone will agree was ****

If you are looking to game, then perhaps the decision now is a bit difficult, but in probably a years time it would be hard to justify XP. Might as well just get Vista as youll probably end up getting it especially if you game...

I use vista 64, and other then the odd program not vista compatible i havn't had any major problems with it. Overall i get better performance on vista then i used to on my XP machine.

somehting that is 64bit due to the demanding games out, need the xtra ramsss :D and well most things are vista now so may as well make the move
