I started playing FIFA 09 yesterday and was wondering what assistance levels everyone uses, particularly for shooting, crossing and through ball (there seems to be little advantage in using anything other than assisted for passing)?

What got me wondering was I had a quick blast online and had most of the possession, fashioned more chances and generally played better than the other guy but I still lost becuase his shots were always on target whereas mine, on semi-assisted, always shot wide. I'm pretty sure he was using assisted shooting.

If you're a good player it seems that manual through ball gives you an advantage but can the same be said of shooting on semi-assisted? Also, is semi-assisted the best setting for crosses?

Using default at the moment and it's working well

Assisted passing and shooting are both an absolute must.

Semi assisted shooting makes 1v1's even harder and I found myself constantly shooting wide or hitting the wood work.

Semi assisted passing makes your passes much more wayward, both under and over hit a lot of the time.

I have them all set to assisted, apart from the ones that have a semi-assisted option, those are on semi.

I agree with the above - it does make passing and shooting harder, but it's not that hard to score even with them all on manual. I find this way there's a bit of a "challenge"! :D

Tut tut Anders0n :p

Wheres the challenge if you have to use assisted for shooting? Seems pointless as it always makes sure its on target. Much more satisfying when you know youve had some input when youve scored a goal. Go and play FIFA from the last decade if you want that :p

Like Tute I dont use full assist for anything if theres a semi-assist option - first thing I did before even playing the game and I havent played FIFA for years...

The challenge is trying to beat other good players.

It doesn't make sure it's on target at all, it's still ridiculously easy to miss on assisted, so it's not pointless.

The assisted settings are not some sort of progress meter, it's their to help you find what you're comfortable with.

I think they should get rid of all the different settings and just have one standardised set, like pro evo.

Absolutely.

I switch the settings to Semi, assisted, semi, semi, manual. Sad i remember this but its all 'cause in Fifa 08 whenever i went round my sparring partners pad i would have to change the controls

Offline play I use all manual apart from crossing which is semi assisted as its just annoying when you try and cross manual and just blast it out straight ahead lol. Its a bit too arcade with all assists on but for online play they are needed as 99% of people use them.

I can see why you do this but surely if your used to most things set to manual or semi-assisted then why not play that online too? I didnt really notice up til now that a lot of people play with most things assisted, with shooting being the main one. Would be nice if ranked games only allowed semi-assisted mechanics at most.

Indeed - you cant be that good if you require all these aids. I guess it would be good in ranked or online matches that all are removed (or you have one base setting for all) but you can choose whatever setting offline - like a difficulty level to help you get better at the game at your own pace...

Problem is that FIFA has always been the game to appeal to the masses so no doubt all the options are there for accessibility...

EDIT: Ive been trying Manual just to see how much harder it is - whatever happens it will be a much more satisfying challenge...

I've yet to try manual shooting since i first started playing Fifa 08 actually, might give it a go tomorrow afternoon see if it makes my shooting even more terrible (unlikely :p)

PS. You up for some games tomorrow afternoon Ps3udo?

Yeah I should be around - though probably better early evening. Just give me a shout here or on PSN if Im on - manual for all settings should be a right laugh :D. Looking forward to it...
