As the title says really.......im thinking most likely I will just buy the tux....where would you recommend? I tried one on in T.M. Lewin yesterday and whilst the jacket was nice the trousers were so thin they look stupid....at it cost 300 for just the jacket and trousers (so need shirt, cummerbund, bow tie etc).....where is reasonable?

If you are going to wear one once every two/three years then hire one from Moss Bros, otherwise M&S is worth looking at.

Depends how much you care about quality, but matalan do one for about 60 quid all in. wouldn't say it was fantastic quality but if you only wear it once/twice a year then i'd say its ok.

Get a 50 quid one from M&S

renting is just faffing about and personally I doubt many people will notice the difference between a 50 quid one and a 500 quid one - a dinner jacket (or tux if you're an american) is informal wear for parties/balls etc... - basically you're going to get ****** in it - why spend lots of money on something you're probably going to get beer spilt over - no one will notice if you're wearing a cheap one as you're most likely going to be wearing it at night at a venue where everyone is getting drunk

As mentioned; In the UK, it is called an evening suit or dinner suit; a tuxedo is a white jacket.
Obviously, in North America, they call almost anything 'formal' a tux'.

Buy one ex hire from Moss bro's or similar if you want cheap otherwise, get one made, they last a lifetime and cost the same as an ordinary suit.

I am a classically trained musician and as such this has been my 'uniform' for many years. I spent a lot on my first DJ only to get lobbed into a swimming pool in Italy whilst still wearing it.

Now, I purchase mine from the charity shops for £5ish. I tend to get drunk wearing them, they get stuff spilled on them by other drunks as well. Add to that the previous owner my have gotten a couple of nights at most out of most of them and you are on to a winner!

Check out ebay. I bought one a couple months ago, was just described as 'Vintage Dinner Suit'. Won it for £30 and wasn't expecting much.
Quite shocked when it arrived - 100% pure wool and handmade in England in 1971 (it had a hand-written quality control type label in one of the pockets) and in perfect condition.

I guess I got real lucky, but definately worth a look on there.

Get it fitted. There is nothing worse then an off the shelf dinner suit.

AIDS? or Rape?

I have only worn a tux once, and I need one again this Christmas. I usually just rent one for about £40 to £50. It isn't the kind of thing I really want to own to be honest.

Do all tuxes/dinner suits have to have those trousers with the stupid stripe down the site? I hate them!!

I suppose AIDs or Rape could be construed as being worse then an ill-fitting dinner suit, yes :p.

I have 3 dinner suits, 1 of them with those silly little stripes. They're fashionable, dontcha know. What what ;).
