Just before i set off to work this morning i turned my car on 10 mins before i set off just for the engine to warm up & then i set off to work afterwards as normal but i noticed that the handbrake / warning light in my car kept flickering / flashing, hhmmm strange the handbrake was not on at all?? and it kept doing this throughout the whole way to work and when i dropped my GF back at her house i turned the engine off etc and set off again and it still did the same thing! It stopped at random times for 5 mins or so then kept constantly flickering and flashung again, then when i was around 2 miles away from work i started to hear a strange vibrating / small jolts from the engine. Sounds very worrying to me, iv got Peugeot 205 1995 1.1, had the car for 2 years the only thing iv had iv replace on the car is the fan belt. Before anyone asks as well the Cam belt got changed 2 years ago just before i got the car & i have only done exactly 3000 miles since iv had the car, can anyone else suggest what might be wrong & would it be recommended if i got it checked out asap?

Thanks all - Liam

Its probably not just the handbrake light its probably the brake warning light... Check and top up your brake fluid that should sort it.. If not the pads on the front may be worn and activating the wear indicator...

Yep im 100% sure as iv got a seperate oil light along the dashboard of my car, the way the flashing went was all random and it did not do it at a certain time like i could be traveling at 30 then if i switch to 40 the light disappeares.

This happened to me on my 99v Fiesta Zetec 1.25, I thought it was the handbrake light flickering, turns out it was an oil warning and eventually the engine went pop. :o

also, don't bother with the whole warming her up in the morning thing, it has been proven to do the engine no good due to lack of oil pressure.

Why is there lack of oil pressure, the oil pump is surely driven off of the crank?

Thanks guys for all your suggestions! I had an idea it could be brake related because of the brake light, i'm going to look at the brake fluid at lunch but i have doubts that it is not the fluid as i checked it 2 weeks ago and it was on normal level, if this is the case im going to take the car into the garage asap so the brakes can be looked at.

Thanks - Liam

Yep allowing a car to sit for 10 mins on idle from cold is bad for the engine.

I'd still rather get in to a nice warm car that has fully demisted. Even if it does reduce the engine life. :D

I highly doubt a 95 106 will have much technology under the bonnet (ABS for example) so it will probably be fluids. Check your manual just incase, as some warning lights have double meanings.

Invest in something with Climate Control and heated washer jets, problem solved mine only stays cold for 3 mins or so before heat starts coming out :)

I get 6 bar pressure on cold start up ;)

I thought it was more to do with the oils lubrication qualities at low temperature?

.

But its illegal to leave a car running unattended so your either standing out side the car in the cold waiting for it to warm up or sitting in the car waiting for it to warm up or sitting in side your house having a cup of tea breaking the law ?

Only if its on the road... If its on your drive or private car park then its not.

There are a few laws concerning leaving your engine running and your right that quitting (as its known) is only if your on the road but im sure i was reading some thing about you being able to be done due to noise and pollution and this didn't matter whether you were on the road of not ?....could be wrong though.

Right i looked at the brake fluid earlier on and it was lower than i thought it was, it was below the normal level but it was around 3mm away from the "DANGER" Mark. So im guessing that it is most likely the brake fluid as its warning me it could be low? Anyway im taking it to the garage later to have it looked at.

From what i know, its a peugeot thing, the flexy rubber brake lines to the calipers split behind one of the plastic retainers and you slowly loose brake fluid. The flashing is 100% a fluid warning for the brakes - the light just doesnt latch on.

If its like my 306 the part will be about 9.50 from eurocarparts and 5 mins and a brake bleed to fit.

Been to the garage this afternoon & indeed the brake fluid was low and got it topped up and the light dissappeared and never came back on during the way home! :) But he told me that iv got to lookout incase the light comes on again because then it could be a brake fluid leak.

Thanks all - Liam
