FAO: Hedge and any other posties

Hi mate,
Just had a quick search through the forums and I gather you recently started work as a postman. I've got an interview next week for a postman position and was wondering if you could shed any light on what to expect, what they'll ask and if there's any sort of tests/assessment.

Also, how's the job going? Was it what you expected? Do you enjoy it?

Cheers.
20 years ago when I did mine it was basic maths and english and also mental tests looking at two similar addresses trying to see if you could spot any differences between the two.

Are you going for delivery work? If yes then you'll be part time I'd imagine, we have something like 7.24am to 2pm here, six days per week with either a rolling day off or you can opt to work five weeks and get the sixth week off.

Alright chaps. Ive just got home at about 5 after having a hellish long day.

I start at 9am and have hours set til 2.30pm, however you get some earlier days, and some crap like today.

There was absolutely loads in for me today, and the people who are meant to sort about 75% of the stuff before i come in, hadnt really done much at all and i had to sort most of it myself.

My car is in for its MOT and I have to get the bus to my walk, and pickup bags from local points. So it was pushing 11.30 by the time i actually put a letter in the first door.

Then after 4 bags full of mail and loads of parcels i had an absolute utter nightmare :(

Hopefully tomorrow wont be as heavy.

The wage... For a flat 25hr week i came out with 170 quid. Hourly rate is about 7.70 or so.

I definately underestimated the work involved. Its a lot harder than I imagined, however I do have about 30 odd blocks of flats on my walk. And sorting mail in the morning is a right pain in the ass!.

Oh, i think the full time wage is £303(give or take 50p or so) a week for 37hrs.

However they arent taking anyone on full time.

Finished about 3.45-4pm really.. but then i walked back to the office and did my knocky offs :)

Was a pain in the ass because i packed up all the parcels out of my bag, yet when i was doing my round, i realised they were for the far end of a road which wasnt even on my patch!. so once i finished i wandered up and delivered them anyway. to save me taking them back

i did about 5 parcels that were miss sorted :( swines! :D

Does sound like you had it bad then  Once you have being there a while it sort of clicks and you will find you will finish much earlier than 4pm  Today I was done for 12.30 I tend to walk/run so I can usually get done quickly, our office cannot let us out until the miss sorts come up which tends to be about 9.30 so getting out early is a no-go for us unfortunately.

And? Its 24k a year........ get a proper job and earn more?

KaHn

Just because your earning good money now dude no need to slam people who earn a pretty average wage :)

i would kill for 24 grand for doing 3-4hrs work a day. a nice quality of living is more important than long hours for more bucks.

Money is nice but people live very happily on 18k +

Aye they dont let us out until about 9.40 at my office too.

I reckon i can get it down to about 1.30-2.. but not a chance in hell until i have my car back on the road and until the new year lol

Gone are the days of just walking out of the office when you have prepped up now you have to wait, was only less than a year ago they changed the rules of letting us out :( We could get finished well early lol :D Suppose that’s why they changed it.

Oh you going to be working from your car then? 1.30 Sounds about the normal time to finish :) 4 is madness! :D
