I have been getting a tad concerned about energy consumption with the price of elec going up etc. so I bought myself a cheap energy meter to see what my main pc was consuming

spec

mach2gt modded, regassed and quad tuned (although I never got round to getting one)
tagan 580w psu
e6400 on a p5n-e at 3.8ghz/1.63vcore
2 gig ram
2 hdds
one optical
watercooled 8800gt
aquaextreme 50z pump
1 x 120mm fan (+the big prommie ones modded into my v2000)
usb kb and mouse
iiyama 454 crt monitor

The total draw according to the meter is 580w

does anyone else have any data on this - I wanted to know really how much going straight water cooled would save me

I've always though phase change was ridiculous...same with TEC setups. Using that much power to cool something is just daft imo.

Just did a quick calc

5 hours per day
7 days per week
52 weeks per year
= 1820 hours

=1238 KwH at 680 w
@ 10.4p per kwh = £129 per year

There's a saving there but not masssive. Since I'm using the phase pc mostly for file serving as I'm not playing many games atm I'll probably keep it and get some bigger hard drives in the HTPC downstairs so I don't have the phase machine on as much

I'll measure the htpc tomorrow as a comparison

430w psu
be-2350 @ stock
2 hdd
2600xt
1 optical

129/year for the power may not seem a lot...but that seems like a lot for an old school 2mb cache 65nm chip at 3.8ghz

At least get an e8600 and stick it under phase :p I mean an e8400 on air is faster than the e6400 on phase.

Won't somebody please think of the environment!

I could be tempted for a 8400 but would I need a new board as well?

Could I drop it into the P5N-E sli and expect 500fsb (the board is capable of this with the current chip)

I'm pretty sure I would need a new board for a decent overclock on a q6600
