Trying to decide what would be the most comfortable mattress. From reading it appers that open coil is cheap and bad. Continous sprung is very good, and pocket sprung may just be the best. But then there are also memory foam topped mattresses.

It's MAIL ORDER so i can't go and test them out.

Opinions please! Would you rather get:

well i'd perhaps look up some reviews for that make mate, I paid £350 a few weeks ago for a king size (5') divan and mattress set from "Dream Beds Ltd" I hadn't heard of them but tested the bed at a local shop, and its incredible quality.

I wanted to feel the quality of the bed before I bought personally though.

we got our Ikea pocket sprunt double mattress for £170 I think about a year ago....its the most comfy mattress imo....would well recommend it

I'd go for pocket sprung, the top one looks good as it has tons of individual springs so is more likely to give way or support you in the right places.

If you want the added comfort of memory foam I'd suggest buying a separate topper - I'm dubious about how long memory foam lasts before it stops springing back into shape, so best it's not permanently attached to your mattress.

I've just spent £600 on a pocket sprung matress with a memory foam top lay, went for a firm type, its very very good, so i'd go with something on your list that's pocket sprung and has a foam top layer.

I've just recently purchased a memory foam one. It is well worth it and all i can say is that its the most comforatble mattress I've ever slept on. Also got a 5 year guarantee with it. Cost me £250 for a double.

Personally I prefer pocket sprung.

I would strongly suggest that you go to several bed shops and try lying on different mattress instead of just buying blind.

Beds and mattresses, you should always try before you buy. One persons comfort is another’s discomfort.

Not trying a matress before you buy is utter madness, your seriously considering spending several hundred pounds on something which you have no idea if it will be what you want? I'ts not just a question of pocket sprung or foam top or what ever you've got to combine that with other padding/wadding materials used and the spring tension etc.....

Would you buy a pair of £50 jeans based on a picture and a description if you didn't know they fit ..... I doubt it.

Back on topic we have a pocket sprung jobby with a memory foam topper it's medium sprung and has loads of other stuff in it like wool etc.

No, utter madness would be if he dressed as the queen and had a tea party with his invisible friends.

That may well be perfectly normal behaviour for a royalist schizophrenic, however buying a matress for several hundred quid without lying on it is normal behaviour for nobody of sound body and mind or an ounce of common sense.

Again i'd echo whats said here, work out which ones your interested in range wise and find someone in real life that has them in stock then go and lie on them for a decent amount of time (not just hop on hop off) I found the memory foam top layers ok if i lead on my back, but on my side the pocket sprung was much better so ended up going with that.

firmness wise going too hard can be as bad for your back as too soft, its really about your weight more than anything, you need to sink in enough to support your whole body as apposed to having only a few contact points... check you can just slide your hand under the curve of your back, not too easy, not too hard :) (that the advise from my osteopath sister at least...)

I bought a memory foam mattress for about £600, I would always recommend them now, I used to wake up and feel like i'd been beaten up, had a few back problems, now I feel slightly better in the mornings.

Last time I went to look at mattresses (at a famous dept store), I was told to lie on it for 20 minutes and up to an hour if I had the time. I was also told that it takes around 2 months to get used to a new mattress properly.
