My XFX 9800x2 died the other day and XFX cards come with a great warranty so I got a full refund for it.

Now I need to decide between a 4870X2 or GTX 280 XXX
looking for the best card at 1680 x 1050 Got £400 to spend?? its a Crossfire board i have. so sli is out of the equation??

cheers Kid

Try a search!

For that res get a 4870 1GB no point in spending money for the sake of it when you will see little gains.PLus if you upgrade the monitor you can plonk another 4870 and run xfire.

^^ as above no point having anything more then 4870 1 gig at that.

playing currently all maxes out far cry with 4 aa all maxed out tf2 8aa all maxed out cs:s 8 aa it handles everything

m8 i would avoid the x2 i have one and regretting it now, seems very hit and miss between people, some love it some hate it. wish mine worked the way my gtx did

Think I will go for the XFX GTX XXX,

I have had both the 7950x2 and the 9800x2 and both have packed in luckily the XFX warranty is so good, just keep getting my money back. so its not a case of cost I haven't paid for a card in 3 1/3 years scoop!!!!

I think more and more game are going to support PhysX.

I'd say a nice gtx280, you can never have enough firepower in todays games and a fast card is always beneficial although if it's value for money your after a top end card will never match a mid range one in that respect, the x2 is nice although there seems to be quite a few ppl who have had problems so takes ** pick

Go for the GTX 280, although I am an ATI fan and the 4870x2 is faster...the GTX 280 just seems to be smoother in some games due to it normally having a better min frame rate.

However, a 4870 1Gb would be adequate for that resolution for now. In 6 months you can pick another up for cheap, and crossfire them when the new generations are out.

Oh btw, when more and more games start supporting physX...Havok will be used as well which is ATI's version

I think x2 solutions are just to HOT, there lifespan isn't that great, the memory just cant take the heat!! I had two x2's and both have been a bit jumpy with my old Intel X6800 (4Ghz) don't think the pci-e can handle the bandwidth.

just got a QX9770 (only paid £500 BNIB!! and got £175 for my old one. cant wait to try this with a decent card got a £20 7200le just to get me running.

Can anyone get hold of the GTX280 XXX though? As i have one on back order for nearly a month and XFX still havent got any to distribute!!! :(

XFX GTX260-216 Black Edition,as quick as a stock 280,quicker in some instances. Can be purchased elsewhere for £217 + delivery.

The X2 is a great card; I've not had a single problem with mine.

But it's overkill at 1680x1050.

+1

haven't had a problem, and it keeps gettin better. 8.11 drivers are keeping it cool and quiet. so rosy future ahead. i remember that my 8800gtx vista drivers took a good 6months to mature at the time (may not just be the gfx since nvidia board prob was the culprit ;))

depends what you play, a 4870 will do most games fine for that res, but i run that res too and i have a 4870x2 and in a few games its not exactly impressive but a tad dissapointing, but yet again the rest of my systems letting it down, crap motherboard and that so dont go on what iv just said cause apparently this 4870x2 is a good card but maybe im greedy :p
