Hey boffins of the OcUK forums!

Thinking of upgrading to the currently discounted Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCS Extreme 1024MB.
I'm upgrading from an X1950 Pro and so I'm expecting quite a jump in performance.
I believe my 400W PSU should be adequate in powering it (I don't have a lot of other components).
Speaking of other components, my current system is:
  • E6600 (still at 2.4GHz)
  • 2x1GB (5-5-5-15) I'm thinking of maybe buying 2GB more of the same modules or getting the cheap 4GB OCZ set.
  • DFI Infinity 975 GX

Will the 400W PSU spontaneously combust?
Will the system hold back the graphics card?
Would you recommend a slightly cheaper card?
Would you recommend something I haven't mentioned?
(Note – I am attempting to keep this upgrade inexpensive)

Thanks a lot!

What res do you game at?

Which 400W? Do you overclock? Do you have lots of hard drives/optical drives? if it's a decent brand with enough juice on the +12V rail it should handle it.

To be honest the most I have seen my computer suck up is 380w and that was during running IntelBurnTest, so that was my quadcore maxed out at 100% on all 4 cores. Dont forget, it is overclocked too. Also during playing crysis I got like 360w being used, so I think you would be fine.

But that depends on what PSU you have, if its a cheapo generic one, then I say go buy one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...4&name=Corsair VX 450W ATX PSU (CMPSU-450VXUK)

or one of these for a bit more if you plan to ever upgrade or add more components in the future: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-008-CS

and a few quid more will buy you one of these (oh boy): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...name=Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU

Thanks for the responses

I'm running an Akasa 400W Greenpower.
My components are:
  • E6600 (Stock, I don't overclock)
  • 2x 1GB G.Skill 5-5-5-15 PC2 6400 Modules
  • 2x 7200RPM Hard Drives
  • 1x DL-DVD Drive
  • 5x 120MM Fans
  • I'll be running 1 USB receiver at most. (All my junk is charged off my macbook)
I game at 1680x1050.

Thanks again!

You can try it....but I have seen people having problems before on similar setups. If you have problems with the PCI-E lane reverting to 4x or 1x then it's probably the PSU.

well if u did not overclock i say it will cut it. surely it will handle on idle use gpu stress test check if it can handle

Your PSU has dual 12V rails rated at 16A and 18A. I would think it would be able to handle it well, it seems a good quality PSU.
