BlackShark cracked on day zero :(

No, you try the seats out, realise they are not what you want, and then either buy better or don't buy at all.

One reason piracy is so rampant has to be the complete lack of good demo's anymore.

If that were the case why to people continue to play pirate copies after they've tried them?

You don't sit in a car at a showroom, decide you like like it and drive off with it without paying.

The main reason piracy occurs is because it's easy to do and generally easy to get away with, there's not much else to go with on that. What i thought we were talking about was, if piracy is so easy, why are legitimate consumers forced to endure the pain in the backside that is limited installs and over the top DRM? It clearly serves little purpose at present, so why do developers continue to insist on using it?

I've had a theory for a while that the DRM is actually logging everyones details that are pirating the game, building up the details for a hefty fine :p

Thats way too simple a view of piracy, in a car showroom, you have some people taking test drives, some people sitting in the car and some people buying. Basically people who are pirating games for the purpose of playing for free will continue to play for free. People who pirate because they want a taste of the game to see if its worth splashing out 30-40 quid on something they dont like... well they *may* buy the game especially if theres an online element. People who want a game fanatically will pirate the game because its out 3 days before their pre-order arrives. Tackling piracy means you have to tackle them all.

Your definition of "most" is clearly very very wrong, most people wouldn't even know how to do that, or why they should.

EA would disagree with you. In this World of P2P and a certain Swedish site being in the news every few weeks I would be suprised if most people didn't know how to obtain games / cracks / etc.

Yes they may not know, initially, how to use them but when someone thinks they are going to get something for free then they are sure to ask around, google, etc. and generally find the means to use it.

IMO, known torrent sites IP should be blocked by ISP's. ISP's should also block known torrent ports too.

Lets face it, torrents and most P2P apps are used by users for Porn and piracy and other copyrighted media.

If you think P2P and torrents are for home videos and map packs you are an idiot.

edited to say 'you' was not aimed at anyone specific

I agree that the majority of bittorrent traffic is created by piracy, but there are still plenty of legitimate users. One such example would be Metal Gear Solid 4, whenever a new patch is released users are given the option of using the Konami file server which can be slow when a new patch has just come out or download it via BitTorrent which is typically faster on patch day.

what is the world coming to when guys want to put a stop on free porn :p

Piracy keeps loads of businesses going, providing jobs and work for hundreds of people. If a game doesn't sell well it's because it's rubbish, not because of piracy.

Known torrent ports? Nobody uses a known port, they should be using a random one.

Anyway, yes, lets get rid of p2p. Scrap the blizzard updator, the iPlayer will have to go as well, thats peer to peer if you download the shows to watch later. And skype.

And taking that approach, we'll end up like china. Strict internet censorship only showing what the government wants us to see, in case we download anything illegal.

This!

If I enjoy a Demo, I most likely buy the game.

But there just isnt any. COD WAW is a good example of how it should be done. They need it beta tested, so they just let anybody play the beta demo for a while, get good server/game testing, and lots of people will decide they like it and then buy it. None of this invite only beta rubbish or just not bothering with a demo and hoping people will spend £30 on something they have never played.

I remember the days when I only ever bought a PS1 or PS2 game if id played a demo, and pretty much every game had one!

I always thought the whole piracy thing was more of a problem in Korea/Russia where stores sell pirated games, so there as easy to get hold of as non-pirated games. I can't imagine a few thousand downloads from piratebay has much of an impact?

Edit **

Just realised that those stores probably downloaded the games from a torrent site, and selling copies of that download is as bad as downloading X times.

If you're going to be a pirate at least be honest about why, you want it for free and can be reasonably sure to get away with it.

Wow you are a tool. Don't presume everyone is like you.

I don't "pirate" games. I have downloaded the odd one or two over the years. Most notably I downloaded Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2 and completed it before it was released in shops.... and then went and bought it.

Recently I purchased X3:TC from Steam and BOY do I wish I had bothered to Pirate that game as I cant even pass it on being connected to my Steam account.

It is not a noble quest you ignorant forum goer, it is simply that it without playing a game you simply cannot tell if it is good any more. There is not a single review site or magazine you can trust any more, so best trust yourself.

I think if more devs released demos it would prevent the kind of "piracy" thats being mooted here but that is not always possible due to whatever technical reasons. I'm kind of leaning more towards the anti-pirate camp these days but I understand why some people will continue to download stuff. If people do head out and buy a legit copy of a game they downloaded, then cool but i reckon a lot of peeps dont. I'd be pretty peeved to find that the pc games industry had in fact been destroyed by illegal downloads. I'm pretty sure thats not the case but if it was.... I also think games piracy and the like is just another symptom of the "i want it now" culture we have fostered. People want more of what they cant really afford. Anyway....

So presumeably for all the ones you didn't buy you imediatly uninstalled/deleted content and sent a check off to the developers for the rental price?

If you want to test a game legally rent it, but of course that would cost money and just be far to hard wouldn;t it ;)
