Is there a limit on how much you can spend with pennies alone?

Arguing this with someone at the moment, is there a limit on paying in pennies up to a certain point?

Say; I don't think it's legal to pay for something that's £20 all in 1p coins, they disagree, who's right and if I am, can you back it up - thanks. :)

COINS:

Coins are legal tender throughout the United Kingdom for the following amount:

£5 (Crown) - for any amount

£2 - for any amount

£1 - for any amount

50p - for any amount not exceeding £10

25p (Crown) - for any amount not exceeding £10

20p - for any amount not exceeding £10

10p - for any amount not exceeding £5

5p - for any amount not exceeding £5

2p - for any amount not exceeding 20p

1p - for any amount not exceeding 20p

So basically shops can refuse you.. :)

(edit - I want some 25p (Crown's) Do they exist, where can I get some from ?

I always thought as long as its real sterling you can pay by anything. But shops can refuse to accept it, ie £50 notes.

Can't see why there would be a limit, after all its legal tender, doesn't matter if it's is 1p 20p £5 £20etc. Think the trouble starts if you go to somewhere like Tesco and pay for £90 worth of shopping with loose pennies as it will take a a long time to count it.

Didn't someone in the news recently get fined for trying to pay with excessive amounts of pennies?

Usually the students around here either try to pay for a £1-10p fare with £10 notes or buy a £3 fare with pennies; just as well I'm not a driver!! ;)

There's no limit, there's legal tender which a creditor must accept but that is only relevant to paying debts. Shops can refuse or accept whatever they like.
