I' ve almost built my system and i just lack graphics and a Cpu. I have heard that some new 55nm cards to replace the 280gtx are almost upon us. I really really dont what to spend a small fortune on the 65nm when the new cards are almost here. I run a 24" monitor so i've saved for two cards. What am i to do wait a week or so or get a grip and buy whats in now? Cheers Simon

Personally I would wait and see what the benchmarks show for the 270 and 290 when they are released. I don't believe they will be significantly better but much more expensive, but its always nice to ensure you don't get buyers regret so close to a new release :). I am not sure on the release date though, but if the GTX 290 beat the 4870x2 then prices for that card may drop. However you never know what the Pound/Dollar exchange rate is going to be anyway (The parts for the PC I bought in september for £710 are now £140 more expensive :D)

I 've waited over 2 months without a "real" computer so yes i would spew if the new cards were faster, cooler and a little cheaper because of the smaller process.

The new cards won't be cheaper or even the same price as the 260 and 280. The 290 will probably compete with the 4870x2 and the 270 will beat the 4870, they will come with a big price premium otherwise it will be detrimental to the current stock of 260's and 280's.

However the other cards might reduce in price by an insignificant amount (£5-10), I'd wait if its less than 2 weeks. Otherwise just get something since you've been waiting 2 months. Since if you wait until the end of november or so, there's probably going to be new cards announced for a couple of months time etc lol. Oh btw the ATI cards are 55nm and they run very hot :D

I'm assuming your going Nvidia? a Single GTX 280 would be sufficient for 1900 x 1200 I think, maybe even a 4870 1Gb (unless your wanting to max out Crysis in every area).

The above link is an interesting read I think

I'm in the same position. In no hurry for a new card so figured rather than buy a GTX260 Core216 now, I'd wait until the refresh and see what the score is. Worst case scenario is it's a new card at a new, silly pricepoint, in which case I can simply buy a 260 Core 216.

Cheers for the quick response chaps, this will be my last big build for quite a while, and i've really gone for it, as i have a new baby coming mid December and would like to get some me time in before all hell breaks loose. I thought might get the newer gen as it will give me breathing space for 12-18 months untill games may need direct x 11, become too demanding ect.

I'm in exactly the same situation.

I've decided to just upgrade everything except the graphics. Having a faster CPU will give my scores a bump for now, and may even alleviate some existing bottlenecks with my card.
I don't think the 4870 is very good value for money compared to a month ago, so I'll just avoid buying it.

The card refresh for DAAMIT is due in Q1 2009, I'll sit tight until then :]

Your being very hopeful if you think the new generation will be released that early ;). ATI have lots more money to make from the 4xxx series :P. Earliest you should hope for the next generation of cards is early Q2. I may be wrong however, you got to remember Nvidia used the 8xxx series for ages and even continued to use it in the 9xxx series.
