Im looking at spanking some more insulation down in the loft running it at right angles to the beams and existing insulation.

Does anyone know what thickness I should be topping it up to? Whats the minimum these days? 270mm?

Ah cracking stuff, it looks like B&Q have got some deals on at the moment for 200mm eco stuff at a R rating of 5. Might have to get some tomorrow.

On a side note, I wanna use the loft for storage as well. Does such a flooring exist that contains insulation in it as well? being that I cannot stick anymore rockwool where that is going to go?

got mine done to 300mm i think, for nothing with the cavity wall
free to ALL residents of kirklees and not dependent on income , had some down already but they topped up:)

Anyone found information about the grants available to insulate your homes that Gordon Brown said was available to all households? I've looked on the you gov website but there doesn't appear to be any info about the scheme?

ours was called warmzone and as i said not income dependent, the streets have been flooded with miller patterson vans (the contractor)

I had these "grant" people come round to my home.
My house was built in 1999 and I was not sure if it had cavity wall insulation.
So the guy from the "grant" company comes round drills 2 holes in my outside wall and says "nope" you aint got cavity wall insulation.

So I arrange to have it put it at Grant price = £199 to me (this is about 2 years ago).

There team comes and start drilling some months later only after 10 holes in my outside wall have been drilled and they say to me, Mate you already have Cavity wall insulation. So they refill the holes and go.

I was rather annoyed as had taken the day off of work for nothing in the end. Just make sure you do need it. As the "Assessor" I had obviously didn't know Jack!

After 1989 almost all houses had some form of cavity wall insulation I believe.
I think minimum to meet new building regs for lofts is 250mm. When I topped up the loft insulation in our last hose I put 300 mm in.
You would also do well to insulate between floor joists. I am currently renovating our house and am putting 150mm between joists and the rooms with it done are noticeably warmer.

Check your insurance before you use the loft for either storage or anything else as I have seen policies where stuff in the loft is considered a fire hazard etc ...... just a heads up.

You can get to solid foam blocks that sit on top of your loft flooring then you place your stuff on these blocks. thus topping up insulation and still being able to store stuff.

Building regs at the moment say it should be 10" inches.

Look around at some insulation services, some offer grants to help pay towards the cost of it all. Have a look at Tesco insulation, it goes through the company i work for. Even if you don't get it for free you can still get a grant that helps pay towards the cost of the whole job. http://www.tescoinsulation.com/

I work in an insulation company so all this rubs off on me! :p

The team that did it wasn't Marks insulation was it? Because they are terrible....

You don't have to be on the dole or with kids to get the insulation grants. We both work and had a company come around and give us a quote for the loft insulation. They charged £199 to put 10" of insulation in the loft, insulate the two water tanks and three meters of pipe. The funny thing was I went to wickes before I got the quote and just to put 4" of insulation down(space blanket) it would have cost me £300 in materials alone. We could have had cavity wall insulation as well if we needed it.

WTF? Thats just silly! I cant believe that is true!

Well i was gonna do it today, but I got side tracked with other jobs round the house/Goals on SUnday/F1 Tonight.

As for the insulation between the floors, I saw a PDF on insulation that mentioned how to do this. Getting some netting and making cradles to rest the insulation in. A good idea as this will keep the heat in rooms better instead of it all going upstairs. If i decide to redo the flooring then this will be done!
