Hi dudes,

I've had a car licence for years and it's as clean as a whistle.

I got my big-bike licence a few months ago and was pulled over (on my bike) for doing 51 in a 30. I think I got off quite easily since the cozzer just gave me 3 points and a fine.

Because my bike licence is still in the "probation" period (6 points max for 2 years) I now need to be UBER careful and not mess up again.

My question is this though: if I have a clean car licence too, then is there no way I can "transfer" my bike points to the car licence? Or alternatively, surely if I've had a car licence for years then I'm past the probation period for that and hence I can get 12 points before I lose anything, regardless of whether I'm driving a car or a bike?

Thanks a lot :)

You have three points on your licence and this includes any vehicle you are entitled to drive i.e. car and bike are not separate. When you get your car insurance you will need to declare the three points gained whilst on your bike.

Nope.

I guess I have a new question then.

I'm out of my probation period for the car licence (i.e. max of 12 points)
I am in my probation period for the bike licence (i.e. a max of 6 points).

I just received 3 points for speeding on my bike.

Do I have 3 points "left" before I lose a licence (and if so, which will I lose, bike, car or both?)

Or do I have 9 points "left"?

Bike car License. its the same thing. so you cannot transfer points etc

Not sure why your asking the question really

Because I want to know if I mess up on my bike again in the next 18months and get 3 points, do i lose my licence?

I was in the same position as you and also unsure of this question and the DVLA were no help when asked either. I would suggest just being extra careful for the next 18 months.

try getting done for 150-170 on a motorbike and 80mph wheelie in a 40 as well as the unmarked car doing 130+ then come back to us lol he gave me 3 points after chasing me for 4 miles and was impressed with shower of sparks off the footrest when i got my knee down. was less impressed when 8 of us got done for 128 in a 60 and we all got banned for 3months. so count yourself lucky! yeah it appplies to both so you have to tell both about it.

Some one had a similar query on a different forum. They emailed the DVLA.

From the DVLA
Thank you for your email about the New Driver's Act. The 6 point rule applies to brand new drivers on first licence only

Re your enquiry. On checking your email, you mention that you passed your car test several years ago and recently passed your motorcycle test, therefore the New Driver's Act does not apply to you. The 12 point rule however applies to all drivers.

However, you will be interested to know, if a person who accrues 12 or more penalty points, under the totting-up provisions is disqualified under Section 35 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 as amended. -

[ A driver who accumulates 12 penalty points on his or her driving licence within a 3 year period, faces disqualification for a minimum of 6 months (Section 35 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988). These are referred to as the "Totting Up" provisions. - However it is the dates of the offence and not the date of conviction that counts, to prevent anyone delaying court proceedings. ]

After the period of disqualification has been served, the driver will receive a licence free of any penalty points which may have been incurred before the latest disqualification.

On return of a licence, the disqualification is shown on the endorsement section in an abbreviated form. This appears as “DISQ. S35 R.T. OFF ACT 88”. An endorsement of this nature must remain on a driving licence for a period of 4 years from the date of conviction.

I trust the above information has explained the situation to you. end DVLA.

So there you go, I presume your points go on your one license which is good for 12 points.
