I've took my Q6600 to 3.4 ghz and all is stable running any stress test.

However when turning pc on it often freezes on start up, then when I try 2nd time its fine???

always starts 2nd time ?????????? never crashes after!

any ideas?

voltage @ 1.392
rated fsb @ 1511 x 9 multi

also is this ok for mem?

2 x 2gig DDR2-800 (OCZ Reaper hpc oczrpr10662g)

DRAM freq 491.3mhz

cl 5
trcd 5
trp 5
tras 18
trc 30
cr 2t

@ 2.1 volts

Cheers ?

How long are you prime/orthos stable?

Also, try adjusting your RAM:FSB ratio. You seem to be pushing those DDR2 800s pretty far. Assuming you haven't got the 1066MHz , its not clear from your post...

sorry, it is 1066 ram I just wrote it as I saw it through everest!
I'll be honest I have no idea when it comes to the ram, it was set up like that when I bought it, I've just increased the FSB to get 3.4ghz

i'm prime stable 9hrs +

Like I said it is perfect, after 1st boot, almost as if its like a car and stalls 1st time when its cold lol

sometimes it freezes on my EVGA splash screen, sometimes when loading xp, sometimes on xp desktop.

mostly before bios can be entered though?

Well do you know for sure if you don't overclock it that it will not cause the same problem?

I had the same problem today. I kept on making changes in the BIOS and my PC would crash in the BIOS or just around the Vista screen.

Have your tried your Q6600 at 8 x 400 and the memory at it's standard speed? then try to go higher from there.

I recently had a similar problem with my Dad's build, I found that the motherboard was setting the memory speed itself automatically (IP35), it was different speeds at different times (so the posting screen told me), it would sometimes boot but not first time, always the 2nd or 3rd, once it booted the PC was stable as anything, but would only bootup at random.... once I set his memory to 400 (Geil ULL - 800), it was fine everytime.

I dont know if it will help you or not, but might be worth a try.

Thank you for the reply tomc@t
Memory is not my thing, I really do not understand it, so even putting it back to original settings i'm stuck ? laymens memory for idiots book needed.

it's definatly "boot" stable at 3.2ghz though no problems with booting at all?
Does that suggest anything obvious ???

If I understand your above post, it is booting okay? also I am a little confused to which memory you have, could you link to it on the OcUK site?

I do think the problem is caused by you pushing the overclock on your memory more than it can take, so either your CPU or memory is failing to boot.

If it were me, I would unlink the memory and set it to it's standard speed and then aim to get a stable overclock on my CPU first, then once I got that, I would then look at overclocking the memory, small increments at a time.

I learnt how to do this mainly through the posts in this forum, have a look at this:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17612922

It does not help much with memory, but gives you a idea.

Sorry for confusing you, I cant seem to spit this out lol

My Ram>>>

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-110-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=&name=OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Reaper HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR10664GK)

The reason why I wrote the ram down wrong in 1st place was because I was to lazy to take side off and just whacked everest on, and that was what it came up as. so sorry about that

This Pc was bought already overclocked from here. all I have altered is the CPU from 3.0Ghz to 3.4Ghz and thats when I started getting boot problems?

So my ram clock was already done by them? I havent touched it.

Now that I have dropped the cpu to 3.2ghz it has started to boot fine again

If it is booting at 3.2 and I was you, I would keep it at 3.2 and see where the memory goes upto, increasing the speed from 533 in small jumps.

I would also be tempted to increase the voltage on the memory to 2.2V, it should be okay at that, but check the OCZ website for that voltage.

If you want to go higher with your CPU, you might need to increase the cpu voltage, but I personally would not go over 1.45v

As you probably know that no cpu is guaranteed to give you a great overclock, I got mine to 3.6 and it was not stable, so backed off a little and at 3.3 it was pretty stable for me but not 100%, I settled at 3.2 in the end for stability.

One thing I learnt about overclocking it is a journey of hope!!!

Good luck! ;)

Ok, when you say 533 I realise that is exactly half of 1066, so would I be right in thinking that my memory is slighlty under clocked at a freq off 491.3mhz ?

cheers if you can help no

Yes your memory is slightly underclocked.

Thanks mate, I think when it got replaced during an RMA they put swapped out 800 - 850 for this new 1066

Were the timigs ok ? fast normal slow ??

I cant comment on your timings as I get baffled by them, I just set mine to what the manufacturer states, it is something that I have never really worried about..... :D:D

It maybe PSU/mobo power related? The bump in volts required for 3.4Ghz could be causing the seond restart because there isnt enough power from a cold start?
You could read up on mobo BIOS voltage settings to rule it out.
