Do people not understand that not all first person games are first person shooters?

A bit of a rant in response to other rants. Granted a lot of what I'm complaining about is what I've read in places like YouTube comments, which is not where you'd expect intelligent conversation anyway...

There are a few games out now and out soon that people seem to be misunderstanding completely, for example Fallout 3 and Mirror's Edge.

I'll give you an example. One video on YouTube shows someone emptying about 3 clips of ammo into a guy's head in Fallout 3 before he goes down. The comments reveal that the guy has no small weapons skill, the weapon is in need of major repair and he wasn't using VATS. His argument was that 'I don't care if it is an RPG, if I shoot someone in the head they should die'. This makes my blood boil.

Across the net people are complaining that the gunplay in the Mirror's edge demo is week. IT'S NOT AN FPS FOR ***** SAKE.

*Rant over*

Is it just me?

It's an RPG, whether or not it downs the guy is based on stats, not just because you're pointing in the right direction surely!

Otherwise you'd have to say that traditional swords and sorcery RPGs would have to be one hit kills as no-one can survive a fire-ball to the face.

The whole point of an RPG is that stats and things affect everything in the environment.

Just because it looks like he was shooting the guy in the face he low skill may have mean that he in fact missed or grazed him. The crappy gun could mean that the bullets were degraded or that it was not fired with enough velocity to actually do enough damage.

A single bee sting (even to the face) will not kill you but 1000 will ;)

What is Mirror's Edge then? I'd say FPS is the best fit for it tbh.

I think he means literally it is not a First Person Shooter. Although it does use the same viewpoint as most FPS games and you can pick up guns, so I can see how some people may define it as FPS, loosely.

i'd say it was first person adventure/platformer

they fit the game much better. whilst you can shoot in mirrors edge, it certainly isn't the focus of the game

Exactly!

I'm still going with FPS, you can't just going inventing genres as you fancy :p

+1

And Mirror's Edge isn't an FPS. It's an action/platformer.

It isn't inventing a genre in my eyes, it's more an expansion/variation of a genre. Take tactical RPGs for example, they aren't considered their own genre but they're certainly very different to a standard RPG. Mirrors edge is a first person platformer in the sense that it is a variation of an existing format; no ones ever made a game like it as far as i can tell, so i don't see why it can't be the first to receive that title.

FPS = first person style

Bit unsure about vats... I'd prefer combat was all vats. Bethesda seem to have been not sure which camp to sit in... The twitch shooters or the rpg geeks.

Problem with VATS is that it takes quite a while to recharge (without drugs) so you use it and it looks great. But then you are *forced* to do twitch FPS shooting and dodging waiting for vats to recharge.

Hrmm so dunno yet. For Fallout 4 i would like a more immersive First person structure (e.g. like what Mirrors Edge is like) and not something that has just been copy n pasted from Oblivion.

So is Oblivion an FPS or an RPG..... same with Fallout its not a first person shooter... what do you call it then?

fps = first person style

I would not call Mirrors Edge a "shooter" but its an FPS yep.....

I would class Fallout 3 and Oblivion as FPRPG's, First Person Role-Playing Games rather than try to say they are an FPS or something.

ok maybe... as it does get confusing saying smt is an FPS when its smt else. And someone else things you think it means something when you mean something else.
