Baryphobia - fear of obesity

First we were told it was wrong to be fat. There are traffic light systems, calorie warnings, GDAs plastered over food packaging everywhere warning people - don't be fat - be careful - watch your intakes.

Now apparently this has all gone too far and it's wrong to not want to be fat. In fact, we shouldn't want to be thin. If you want to be thin you not only have a fear of being fat - but an irrational one.

Hang on, how can it be irrational when this is the same country that shoved food warnings down our throats? Irrational on what level? The kind of irrational that's worried about cholesterol, heart attacks, diseases?

We can't smoke, should drink less, not eat too much or too little, be careful to exercise only where necessary and watch out for those creeping anxiety disorders. I'd love to know which 'medic' came up with Baryphobia, probably the same kind that's doing a first year degree in medicine and has a passing interest in New Scientist.

We're going to turn into the most paranoid country in the West at this rate. We're told to do something, then to stop doing it. I feel sorry for the people who take rubbish like this in.

Nah, I'd give you fair odds that the person who came up with the term is no stranger to a cream cake or two. It has always amused me how many scientists come up with pet theories to explain their prejudices, it is natural I suppose but I still find it humourous.

But what is the question here? If it is whether baryphobia is a genuine fear then yep, it probably is. Being slightly overweight isn't necessarily catastrophic for you and this point should be remembered, however nor is it wrong to want to be slim.

Haha funny, eat what you want, drink what you want, smoke what you want.

If people are that silly to take note on everything they read, then they are just stupid...People who listen to this take in everything that is on the news every day, and in the papers every day...talk about being brain washed.

If your getting fat, look at your diet, change it. If your getting thin, look at your diet, change it.

If your happy doing what you do, fine, leave it as that.

deary me.

I agree, if you want to be fat, be fat, if you want to smoke, smoke. I get annoyed when we have to pay more tax so that a fat person can have their stomach stapled etc. Same as when smokers need treatment.

There's a program on Channel 4 coming up about an 8 year old annorexic. World has gone mad!

I saw that advertised, made me feel a tad sad.

No doubt because everything is plastered around about fat people, then you have them Special K adverts: "Can't fit into your bikini? (Shows dencently figured female struggling with dress) Eat special K and lose weight and become THIN" Even though there was nout fat about the last lady.

Poor girl is going to be so paranoid :(

I hate stuff like this, it really does annoy me, one of my family members used to be annorexic, to a very dangerous point, they are a lot better now...But they still worry about eating too much etc, when they clearly aren't fat :(

I think I suffer from it a tad actually.

Don't start on that ;)

I see your point though.

I had to go to hospitol for treatment ages ago, for a proper reason, not because I ate too much (yes, some people can get big naturally without eating numerous amounts, I am aware) but got shoved off home as they thought I was on drugs....Only to have to go back to hospitol again for the same reasons, only twice as bad!

But that's a different discussion :p

It's how society is, all these adverts, the fashion industry, music industry, the media etc are all obsessed with dangerously thin women. This puts pressure on perfectly normal women, children and teenagers in society and leads to all these problems.

An interesting point raised from another thread awhile ago:

Is it the women's gossip magazines which write stories on celebrities gaining weight, or pornographic material and 'babe threads', or both, which you would deam as the responsible media?

I think its the former.

^Women's magazines by far. It's the material that's taken seriously as opposed to porn and babe threads which lets face it, are clearly just a bit of eye-candy and fun.

I'd say mostly gossip magazines and similar programs. This morning on GMTV [yes, GMTV] there was a feature on how to fit into your black dress and control your diet [cue feature presented by two women in small black dresses with appropriate cleavages]. Nearly every women's magazine has feature on diets and pictures of thin celebrities. Those kinds of things are more accessed by women than porn, and a lot of women look down on porn anyway.

I concur. However, as a male I probably can't appreciate how something such as Page 3 could affect people. But on the whole, yes, I agree.

Could baryphobia (is it just me who thinks this is a bizzare name?) also apply to being scared of obese people as well as a fear of getting fat yourself?

Because obese people terrify the life out of me.

Me too...

I had an obese man in a rubber dingy land on me once :( It wasn't nice, I was under water for ever!

the fear of dying will be considered irrational next, and anyone caught doing it will be jailed and sharing a bunk with big barry
