Is there such a remote that can do all this:

  • Power off Windows
  • Operate VLC Media Player (play/stop/pause etc.)
  • Abort Programme (Alt + F4)
  • Allow custom keys/macros

Sorry for noob question, I've just never bought a PC remote before.

I have an MCE remote, and I find the quality very good, and it looks nice.

Not sure if this is of any interest, haven't tried it myself, but seems you can do a bit more with it if you want.

EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention my remote works fine on Vista Ultimate 64 with the microsoft drivers.

I did a little bit of research on that - didn't this remote fail to come into existance due to the company collapsing?

I agree that Bluetooth would be better, but old fashioned infa red is still fine in my books.

I should have mentioned my budget...

I really wouldn't like to spend more than a maximum of £25 inc P+P. But happy to buy second hand.

I've been faffing around with a MCE remote for the last week or so, its a pile of ****.

It appears there are a LOT of hardware problems with them, mine works fine for 5-10mins then won't work at all for an hour or so. Just gonna get a small keyboard with a trackball.

As for IR reprogramming, check out eventghost.

It is possible, as i've done it with the MCE receiver i got with the remote. No dice though still just starts getting 'ignored' by the pc.

Lights blink on both the receiver and the remote, but nothing happens. Its like vista just ignores the receiver.

i use a remote called Streamzap PC Remote

it works on most OS's, not the best looking remote but does the job :)

Driver supports:
Windows (Win98/98SE/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista).

not sure about 64bit OS tho.

Thanks for the suggestion Tosk.

I'm going to try my 360 remote first though, as I already have one.

If necessary I will buy a MCE remote and receiver and sell the remote.

Would be helpful to hear from anyone who has tried this though. ;)

Think I've found a way from my own research...

The standard MCE remote control plus this software:

http://melloware.com/products/intelliremote/

That should enable me to get the VLC Media Player profile I want.

Before I go ahead and buy one, can someone confirm to me that this will work please?

Yes, IntelliRemote works perfectly and can be set up to control and navigate your entire PC, I've been using it on my Compro K100 remote.

I'm not sure if you can get MCE remotes at the moment, I couldn't find one anywhere for a decent price.

MCE remotes are the best laid out and most hand confortable of half a dozen (admitedly cheap) remotes I have tried out, other than failing batteries causing keypresses to be ignroed never had any issue with them.

Usually best with MCE but possible to program use in other apps. Infrared does have a limited range but then agains every other remote I have is infra red as well.
