Just got vista 64 home premium on my system, 4 gig of 1066ram, 2.4 q6600 and it runs very sluggish. Booting up is ok but when i enter windows it takea about a full minute and a half befor i can start doing anything.
After this even things like file browsing is sluggish, tkaing a few seconds to open folders etc etc.
never had this problem with 32bit.

Any ideas?

Have you installed SP1? Also have you installed the drivers. How many programs have you got that start automatically with Windows? Have you done any kind of service tweaking disabling stuff you don't need?

My Vista 64bit runs as smooth as my old Windows XP did on the same system.

echoing the above..

what hard drive are you running? a slow hard drive will kill vista performance, especially for the first minute or so, as it's superfetching

my vista x64 runs silky smooth it dose take a while to load though just because of the amount of crap i have running at start lol other than that

what sort of state is your hard drive in?

Superfetch, indexing etc is all off.
The Vista OEM disc came with SP1 with it. I have a 7200rpm 16mb buffer HDD.
It ok when it loaded up, after about 5minutes, it just very sluggish.
I want to stop loading stuff up but dont know what is safe to do so.

As for drivers, drivers for what?

My chipset, gfx, sound, etc drivers are in there.

don't disable superfetch, that's the best feature in vista
indexing is good in vista too

what av are you running?

consider disabling the defender real-time scanner

superfetch and indexing help with the speed of vista no point turning them off tbh

AVG Free. that seems to start up quick lol. I dont like indexing, works my HDD too much.

And yes Real time scanning is turned off..

avg is ####, get rid of it

either pay for nod32 or try avast instead

indexing only 'works' your hd once, you can also tweak the folders it scans in control panel (removing folders you don't want indexed), at bare minimum i'd suggest at least indexing the start menu, makes the start menu search super snappy

superfetch caches your most used programs into ram, and only does this on pc startup, so use sleep mode to resolve the 'issue' of it doing that

I've turned off system restore and just backup my important stuff to another drive every week or so (overwritting the old stuff). Then I did a defrag and I must say, that for me speed up Vista. :)

So perhaps try a defrag. Also maybes run CCleaner and then do a reg compact with something like Auslogics Registry Defrag Tool. Auslogics also does a HDD defrag tool, and the makers of CCleaner do Defragler. :)

Have a look in Performance Monitor and see what is using your CPU / using your HDD / using the network / filling up your RAM etc...

Yup and yup for sure. :)

Another good one worth trying is Avira.

I have the same sort of problem. Vista takes a minute or two to load everything before i can start to use anything on it. I can start things i want, but if i do it does an age to bring anything up, even minor things like Firefox or even Control Panel.

The thing is I'm using my old IDE Maxtor 80Gb hard drive for my OS and programs and my Western Digital 250Gb SATA drive for games, photos and movies. Will the fact that my OS hard drive is IDE slow Vista down a lot?

Im using a C2D 2.8Ghz, 4Gb Ram too.

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit, didn't want to make another for the same kind of issue!

yes it will

get an F1 or WD Blue, 100mb read/write speeds REALLY make a difference

it's like having a fiesta engine in a land rover

yup

but the 320gb ones are faster, they have different internals (either a 320 f1 or 32 blue will be perfect)
