Im currently looking for a new amp as mine recently decided to fail on me by constantly crackling and eventually fading out, not bad going since i got it for free 6 years ago.

My Budget is around £300 give or take a few bob but overall if their is something exceeding in quality for a bit extra i may consider it.

I want something (although not essential as i have a distortion pedal) with in built distortion. I currently have a Boss Metal Zone MT-2 which is a great unit but i hate refilling the battery all the time but not that essential).

I've been looking at Marshall's but as my budget isnt considerably that high i think Marshall might be ruled out.

Cheers for any suggestion's.

I'd consider the Laney LC30-II. If I hadn't luckily found a cheap Brunetti amp which I got for a bargain, it was the amp I was going to get.

MARSHALL DSL 401

I love Line 6 but its only really good in the bedroom/studio.
The Marshall above will see you through many a gig if thats your aim.

MARSHALL DSL 401

I second that, I got one off an auction site for £250 a month or so ago with a flightcase and a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker.

Just be aware that they can be problematic so ask the right questions if you go second hand.

What year was it made? (aim for post 2004)
Does the sound ever unexpectedly drop off (needs a new rectifier £10 or so direct from Marshall)

And mine had a couple of components that were actually fitted the wrong way around by the factory (resistors/capacitors or something)

I had some issues with mine but fortunately know the guy who fixes amps for Reidys.

It's a fantastic amp if you want to get the Marshall sound on a budget and the clean sound with a Strat is bloomin' marvellous:)

if you can stretch to it, a Randall RG50TC

it's only 50w, but is an all valve amp, so will blow any solid state in this price range (and above) out the water in terms of both sound and volume

Cheers for the info Duder!

looks like the DSL 401 is highly recommended around here, guess i'll check some auction's over the christmas period seeing as they go for £450 new !

I tend to play a lot of 80's/90's rock (Think Lizzy, AC/DC, Metallica, Van Halen)

I was just playing my DSL201 one there and my God is it good. I just got it today, you see.

I'd recommend the 401 on the back of it.

The DSL will cover Lizzy and AC/DC, Metallica and VH with a little help from a pedal or two, throw in Chilli Peppers, Hendrix, Zep, Lynyryd and you get the idea.

A speaker swap to a Celestion Vintage is well worth thinking about:

Never heard mine with a stock speaker.

If Hiwatt is unaffordable then go for a Marshall. The one listed above is excellent, seen it in action a few times. Even the next few down from it perform extremely well.

I'd have all my amps Marshall if I didn't get this beast Hiwatt DR103 for an blistering 50 quid 15 years ago.

This is the amp i have at the moment, it's too loud most of the time i can't put it past 1 but it's recently started to crackle and eventually fade out. Im going to take a look to see if i can fix it but after hearing the sound quality from the marshall and the quality tone (even through youtube) i think it's time for a change.

Incidentally how would I find out what year my Marshall was made?

It'll have a serial number on the back, on the 401 the first four digits are the year of manufacture.

I think they stopped making 201s in 2004 although I could be wrong, I wouldn't worry anyway unless you have issues.

From what I've been told the rectifier is placed too close to hot components and causes it to fry and lose all sound from time to time.

The guy that sorted mine out has customised it a little so that it now sits clear and shouldn't cause a problem, this was about £20 to sort including parts/labour.

Incidentally I got mine back from him yesterday re-biased and ready to go and it sounds 10x better than it did before, it's gone from brilliant to unbelievably good :)
