Please help, can't install new Geforce 280

This is really doing my head in now. Installed my new Geforce 280 with my new 750W Corsair PSU.

Now I tried to install the 180.63 drivers and they get about havlf way through the install just after the ascreen flashes a few times and I get this message:

Windows Installer

Invalid Command line parameters

Portions of this software are based
in the part of the work of the
independent jpeg group

WTF does that mean?. I get the same message when I try to install from the driver disk provided by BFG.
Anyway, the driver does complete the install eventually but when I reboot I can only get 4bit colour and 640x480 resolution and it will not budge from that. I have no nvdia control panel but it does recognise the geforce 280 with 1024ram ect. Dxdiag.exe also lists the card but I have no D3D acceleration or anything.

I have tried many different nvidia drivers with the same message and it's doing my head in now. I have not changed my system at all since upgrading from my 8800GTX which was perfect apart from the new power supply as I only had a 480w.

I have also re-instaleld windows without any problems but still get the same message when trying to install the drivers. It just reverts from the standard 1024x768 16bit resolution that windows starts up with back to 4bit colour when I try to install any drivers.

Another problem is that the card randomly stops spinning and the screen goes blank but the pc is still on as normal. If I hard reset then it's okay again and boots into windows and may not do it for another hour or so. The card has a green & red light and the red light comes on and the fan stops, it's almost like it goes into standby mode or something. Is this happening because the drivers are not installed and not controlling the card?

What do you think the problem is? I have upgrading for years and have never come across anything like this before, I'm pulling my hair out and just want to use my new card.

Motherboard not compatible but I doubt it (Gigabyte GA965P-D3S)
Power supply but 750w should be fine.
Faulty graphics card?

Many thanks.

Have you tried installing the driver from the device manager as a manuel install?

Sounds like it could be something with windows installer. May be a newer service pack would help also?

Try using different power connectors from the PSU - there should be 4 of them, two of which you can split down from 8 ways to 6. The red light is usually indicative of a lack of power. :)

Set PCI/ PCI-e setting to PCI-e in BIOS

Use the WHQL 178.24 rather than the BETA you are using:

http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_178.24_whql_uk.html

Make double sure the card is seated in the slot properly - they are massive and can be tricky.

Try removing any other PCI cards (e.g Soundcards) which may be causing conflicts if they share an IRQ.

When doing your fresh install, have the drivers on a USB drive/ CD and:

Install OS

Instal Mobo Chipset driver

RESTART

Install GFX Driver

RESTART

It may even be worth installing the OS and patching up to SP3 BEFORE any drivers - ignoring ant driver updates from Windows Update.

Maybe even download a more up to date version of Windows Installer from Microsoft download site?

Hope this helps

:)

Nah you don't need Vista, but it would not hurt to try it if you have a copy.
If it still does not work then it may be a hardware issue.

:D

Couldn't resist :D

Hi AndyOCUK and thanks for the reply.

I originally installed the card on my current windows with the same problem, this install of windows was fine with my other 8800gtx card. All of the motherboard drivers ect were already installed.

Power wise the card is fine for 30mins or so but can shut down from time to time, I don't have an 8pin connector but have to use two pci-e connectors into an 8pin adapter and the other 6pin connection I have. I do have 2x 4pin connectors that clip together but that's for the motherboard 12v.

I have a Corsair 750w which should be plenty of power. If the card was not getting enough power then wouldn't it red light all of the time? It's not like I'm pushing it playing games or anything.

I may be able to borrow a copy of Vista tonight so I will have to give that a go with WHQL drivers to at least elliminate a software problem.

Thanks for the replies but if anyone has any other thoughts it would be appricated.

Double check the connectors on your TX750 mate, i got one yesterday and all 4 ofn the GFX power plugs were 6+2 pin connectors.

I'll have a look tonight about the connectors. But I have 2x 6pin connected to an 8pin adapter anyway so why would it make a difference?

Yes quite possibly the 6+2 pins gfx rails will have a different current rate and before you get the drivers installed the card will be running in a very minium state and its possible that you only ask more of it on the odd occation and thats when you cant get enough power to it.

Adaptors split the load - why use one when you have dedicated connectors purpose built for the job on your new PSU?

Waste of money if you aren't going to make use of the separate rails :D

They will have a different current rating:

Corsair TX750W Specifications: Model CMPSU-750TX
AC INPUT 90-264V ~ 10A 50/60Hz
DC OUTPUT +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +5Vsb
MAX LOAD 24A 28A 60A 0.8A 3A

Its all there :D

okay thanks.

But it has cut out whilst in the bios as well. Surely 2x pci-e into an 8pin adapter would be enough power. Why did BFG provide one otherwise?
