Radeon 4870 X2 Flicker

No not ATI, screw them, they will take forever, if do anything at all! Contact HIS (http://www.hisdigital.com/un/) directly and see what they say.

I;ve only ever had to RMA to a vendor directly, and that was my old BFG 8800GTX, and BFG have outstanding customer service, so HIS maybe the same. I know I would never have contacted nvidia directly at that time.

Yeah I bought it from OcUK only a week or two ago. Doesn't appear to exist now though.

It's full title was:
"MSI ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail"

Think I'm just going to have to accept I've lost money and sell it on to someone who doesn't play SWG.

£280 for a new 4870X2 be a good price?

Not sure if the rules allow you to talk bout selling your stuff on this board, you need to do it on the "For Sale" board, but you need to have made 250+ posts (I think) for that.

But im sure thats a pretty good price... not sure how much the MSI's go for though?

I would still try and RMA it with MSI.

Was purchased from OcUK for £324.

MSI won't be able to give me a refund even if I do RMA it will they?

I imagine it would be a straight swap if anything, and I really don't want another ATI now.

No they won't give you your money back, they will do a swap for another. If you don't want an ATI then I guess your only option is to flog it off.

Aye :(

Ahh well. It's not like I haven't learnt this lesson before either.
I should have stuck to my guns and continued to avoid ATI heh.

Thanks anyway

if you contact ocuk they might let you return it, when i got a refund on my powercolour 4870x2 i asked them if i was within the time period to still get a refund with that distance selling thing (it was a week after i bought it) and the guy on the phone told me that as long as its within a month of buying it i can return it to them :) now im the happy owner of a gtx280

Hmm, that's not what they told me on the phone earlier.

Because they couldn't prove there was a fault, I was told in no uncertain terms that they will not give me a refund on the item.

I first logged a problem around a week after receiving the item, but they say that doesn't matter.

get back to them and tell them that its your rights as a customer to get a refund as its not living up to your expectations ;) im almost sure you will still be covered by the distance selling law so mention that

You shouldn't make comments like that, it's difficult to take people seriously when they make such comments.

People have issues with both ATi and NV, it's the way things happen. Due to the amount of 48XX, there's more chance of bad cards getting in with the good stock.

There were quite a few people who got GTX280s that would overheat and crash. It's how it is when it comes to components.

Don't you have any friends who have a PC you can test it in?

I had a 3870X2 that shown similar problems, I sent it back to the retailer, but I made sure I documented the exact problems and gave them instructions on what to test it with to ensure they see that it's faulty.

If OC have supposedly tested it, they've most probably just put it in, installed the drives and ran 3D mark.

As you said it was fine with 3D mark though, it shows that it does work to some extent.

Go to catalyst control center and turn catalyst AI off and see how the card works.

Just got off the phone with them again.

They stated again that they won't provide a refund since I've now had the item for over 7 days. I mentioned that "someone" on the forums said they were given a refund after 7 days, but they denied this.

I happend to get through to the same guy I spoke to earlier about getting it returned so he remembered I'd called regarding the first RMA.

I'm just bitter. For well over 10 years every single ATI card I've had in numerous computers for friends and family has had some issue or another. It's no exageration when I say EVERY. I've never had any isses with the GeForce cards I've had. Or any of the old Voodoo cards I used to use.

And by issues, I don't necessarily mean hardware problems. I mean that ATI just aren't compatible with all games etc. NVidia on the other hand generally work with everything. From my experience anyway.

On the RMA note. I did mention that it happend in the online game Star Wars Galaxies, but the guy on the phone said their testers would not download the free trial of the game just to test it.

So what else can I do? :(

well you are welcome to quote them my rma number as proof if they deny that it happened

Ahh, looks like you have minor defects listed as a fault?

They said they could refund within 28 days of purchase if they could prove the fault.

But they won't install SWG to test that, so I don't know what else I can do about it :(

And actually, if this problem only occurs in SWG, would they even refund it, or just argue that it's a problem with the game and not the card?

does your card make electrical sounds atall? like whining capacitors? the guy i spoke to said that would be fine, originaly they were going to test it but then i told him that i was worried they would not be able to recreate the problem & he said the electrical sound would be considered a fault and that i could rma for a refund

I haven't heard any obvious electrical crackling no.

As they say, it may well work fine for most games, but not with the one I spend the majority of my time on, so fat use it is to me.

Since it appears to work ok, they won't refund / replace it. So it looks like I'm stuck with a card I can't use.

I believe my only option is to sell it on. Unless anyone has any other suggestions?

At this point I'd actually take a straight trade for a 280, even though they are cheaper.

i dont know what else to suggest then mate, maybe someone here who wants the ati card would be willing to trade with you? good luck with it anyway
