Radeon 4870 X2 Flicker

What game is this appearing in? And what do you mean by flickering? Does the whole black area go white now and then? Or does it look like tearing?

I don;t seem to see anything like this on my 4870x2... but tell me what game it is, and if I have it I'll give it a go too.

Edit: Alos, what temps is the card running at? Do the fans kick in when in game?

It's in Star Wars Galaxies. I did try it on Republic Commando too but that just outright crashes when the 3D is launched. I would have tried others, but as you may have seen from my various other threads scattered about the place, I'm having issues with my motherboard atm.

I would test it in another motherboard but don't have one spare. I've tried it on 2 different monitors, and with VGA, DVI and HDMI.

It's hard to discribe the flicker / shudder really. It's not really a flicker in that the picture, or part of the picture, vanishes and re-appears. It's just a constant shuddering over the whole screen. Like someone is holding a candle behind it. Most noticeable on dark backgrounds, but occurs on light backgrounds also.

Perfectly fine in Windows and on the ingame loading screens. Just when processing the 3D it shudders / flickers.

I've contacted OCUK and they're going to have a look anywho. Hopefully it'll get sorted one way or another. I really have no confidence in ATI as it is.

Hi,

have you reinstalled the game since you swapped cards? I had a bit of grief when I swapped video cards. I had to dump the vid config files in a few games then they started up no problem.

Entire PC has been wiped and re-installed from scratch with Windows XP x64, and with Windows XP SP3. Problem is still there

im getting it too sometimes, it seems to happen at random and its as if the card isnt refreshing fast enough, even with vsync enabled im getting the same thing
i have also been getting random stutter in a few games too and just a few mins ago while playing farcry 2 i got loads of graphics corruption

was your card the powercolour by any chance?

well i just called ocuk and was given a rma number so i can return my card for a refund :) i didnt want to risk sending it off to be tested because there is a chance they might not have been able to recreate the problem with it only happening sometimes :) its times like this that remind me why i buy from here :P

Now that you mention the stutter, that did happen once or twice in the game.
All the NPC's looked like they were in stop motion etc.

It just has to be the card...

Just installed my new motherboard and installed the ATI card again. Still get the problem in SWG.

I took the earlier posters advice and ran 3DMark06, the problem doesn't seem to occur there...

That doesn't bode well for the RMA does it?

I've posted in the SWG tech support forums in the hope someone else has the graphics card and the same problem.

If the card just doesn't like SWG, what would be my options?
Would OCUK take it back in exchange for a 280 do you think?

You'd have to ask ocuk that, they are pretty good with their RMA's however, and usually work with you, so it wouldn't surprise me if they would do the swap.

Send a webnote or phone them and ask... if its a fault with the card you will get a RMA with ocuk or the manufacturer no probs, so either way you will be fine... just annoying that's all, but we have all been there!

Is there a time limit on how soon I have to contact them for a possible replacement?

I've had a ticket logged with ATI / AMD for a few days now and it doesn't appear to be progressing very quickly...

Contact them now via the webnote, explain everything and they will tell you if you can get an RMA or not. It depends on a few things, so send the webnote now... don;t want to waste any more time. Be quicker RMAing with ocuk than it would with ati/amd!

Had some other issues start happening with it this morning. On reboot it sometimes gave me a bright white screen with black lines through it and hangs.

OCUK are going to do a straight swap for me on this occasion. Fingers crossed I just got a bad card...

Ok, so they've sent me the card back after a day of testing telling me there's no problem with it. I just plugged it back in to my PC (now with a brand new motherboard) and the issues are still there. This is in basically 2 computers now.

I don't feel confident that they gave it a good lengthy test. The white screen freezes started to occur after a good 4-6 hours of the PC being on.

What are my options with this now?

Oh also, I've set the desktop resolution to 1680 x 1050, but the screen seems to continue to go into a desktop scrolling type mode. The whole desktop won't fit on the screen. I have to scroll left, right, up, and down etc. to see the whole screen. I never had any of these frickin problems with my NVidia cards, grrr!

Doesn't appear to be a search function on the ATI forums either which doesn't help!

Edit: Seems that any widescreen resolution will cause this desktop scrolling...

1680x1050 is your screens native res right? Whats your scaling set to in Catalyst (Catalyst > Digital Panel > Attributes > Image Scaling)?

That's what the monitor says is recommended yes. It's the Samsung SM-2032MW Pebble 20" HD Ready Widescreen LCD. I have the Acer G24 at home which uses 1980 x 1200. It does the same thing there too.

Works perfectly fine for my current NVidia card. I always ALWAYS have problems with ATI. Really don't know why I bothered even trying ATI again :(

I'm giving up playing about with it now. I really don't have anymore time or patience for it. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't work correctly for what I want it for anyway. I need to try and get it returned, or in a worst case, eBay it. Not happy either way

You tried a rma with the maker/vendor of the card (i.e. Sapphire, HIS, Asus etc) as you will have a warrenty with it... they may even just replace it and not test?

What brand is it by the way?

It's the MSI one.

The ticket I logged with ATI / AMD hasn't been replied to in over a week now. I really have no faith in ATI or AMD, they've caused me problems every time I've come into contact with them over the years. Dunno why I was foolish enough to buy one of these cards to begin with...
