I'm getting married next year and myself and my best man are using it as an excuse, I mean errrr.... a way of showing we think each other are cool by buying an Omega Speedmaster watch for each other.

I've had a look online and obviously need to be really careful with the amount of fakes out there but at the same time want to get them at the best price possible.

I know there's a lot of people here that love their watches so was hoping someone would know a good place to safely buy two at a good price. :)

Thanks.

I would have thought that going to an authorised dealer and asking them to knock something off the price would work well. You are getting two, after all, and from what I've heard watch dealers commonly give discounts. And at least that way you know you are getting the real deal, have a warranty etc.

Very true, I will do that. Would be good to have a reputable online place to get an idea of the kind of prices we might be looking at as it seems to vary quite a lot online.

Just buy from an authorised dealer, look for 20% off RRP, the web sellers are unlikely to be any cheaper

be aware that many of the models are not suitable for swimming ( the date ones are OK iirc )

my only other comment is that while the fashion for women is for big sports watches such as the Speedie, is this fad likely to last ? as it is for a wedding gift I would look for something a little more timeless. the Speedie for you and the Ladies version of the Seamaster for your wife ?

Moonwatch for the win. We bought my old man one a few years back.
Definitely recommend going into a store and barter. We got a great deal on just one watch. You should be able to get an awesome deal on two.
Just go in looking to pay a lower than low online price and you should end up doing ok when they come down a bit.
Be as hard as possible. They want to sell the watches :)

I remember buying a Rolex and pretty much getting a TAG for free after some hard bargaining ;)

I love well engineered and simple designs with lots of dials/detail. Rolex Submariner is a favorite apart from the fact it's got a bit of an image. Would prefer something understated, non flashy, good lines and awesome engineering. :)

I love the moonwatch but I agree the design is starting to look a bit dated. Am open to suggestions for similar priced watches to the speedmaster.

Dragging up this old thread as myself and my best man didn't end up buying watches for each other as he was a bit tight on cash at the time. Instead I will be purchasing one soon. I think I've settled for the Speedmaster co-axial but on Omegas website it shows as having date yet on the photo they supply there is no date on it.

What good watch forums/resources are there about to learn more about watches in general. I've read up about movements/calibres but would like to learn more but finding it difficult with so much disjointed info out there. I'd like to know exactly what I'd be getting for my money and what to look for in a watch.

Saw the Breitling 125e and think it looks awesome (with both aero strap and normal) but a bit on the expensive side for me plus it's a bit dressy flash so wouldn't be able to wear it every day, maybe in a few years. Also, the Patek 5970p caught my eye until I spied the price. :D

So back to Speedmasters, if you had the choice of any Speedmaster which one would you pick and why?

TIA

The non date versions have the history but the date version has the advantage of being waterproof enough for swimming

I've found the Timezone forums to be excellent, and really help me when I research future watch purchases.

I've got a few Omegas, and researched a Speedmaster and I initially wanted the closest, most 'authentic' version they do, as that's really what makes me excited about the Speedmaster. I ended up getting the 35th Anniversary Speedmaster edition (a few years ago now) as it happened to be in the store at the time and certainly havne't regretted it at all, although the hesalite crystal is very prone to scratches and the watch itself doesn't have the reasuring 'weight' of my Seamaster.

It obviously depends what you want from your watch, but the Co-axial movement is excellent, and no doubt comes with a sapphire crystal so it won;t scratch - therefore making it a more durable daily wearer.

Make sure you post your choice!

The appeal of having the original style is there but overall I think the harder wearing Sapphire and the self winding, plus the co-axial movement swings it for me, just because it's going to be an every day watch.

Rotty, I would like to have one which I can swim with but it's not necessary, just a nice to have thing. The one I'm looking at I've just noticed does have date, don't know how I've managed to miss it!

The 50th anniversary edition looks the same just minus the date and self winding although probably more desirable in the future as it's more in keeping with the original plus doesn't have the date, shame it looks to be a lot more expensive.
