Hi Gents/Ladies,
So my mum asked me the other day what i wanted for christmas (yes im spoilt at 22 still getting christmas presents) and i cant think of anything other than possibly a HD projector for movies/xbox/pc games?

With a budget of less than 500£, what kind of projectors would be good for watching movies off my pc (including HD), gaming from my pc, and gaming from my xbox? Also my room is only about 8-9foot square, is this sufficient for a decent experience?

Finally should i go ahead with buying a projector, my plans for a screen would be painting a large white square on my perfectly flat wall, does this give good results if the right paint is used? or am i better buying a pull down screen?

Finally (again), I already have a 37inch 1080p HD TV, would you suggest a projector in a room thats this small to be pointless or not? All oppinions welcomed!

Thanks in advance people!

Jack

I was looking at the X10's, however they seem to have shot up from there original 750ish price tag to about 1400 :s. So will a 720p projector still be pretty damn good? And as for what im projecting on, how does a white painted wall do, with a correct matt finish paint etc?

Obviously a screen is best, but a matt white wall will get you by in the mean time. Can't comment on 720p versus 1080p, but I personally don't have enough HD content to justify spending twice the price on a 1080p machine when 720p is still very impressive.

I uses a £20 IKEA white blind as a screen. Looked fine.

PJ are amazing but make sure you get a quiet one that doesnt get too hot.

As Daz said for less than £500 the Infocus x9 and the Optoma hd700x are the main ones worth looking at.

From what I have read the X9 is slightly better than the hd700x however there is an offer online for the hd700x with a free 84" screen which works out around £100 cheaper than the X9 so I decided to go for the Optoma - Just waiting for it to be delivered now :D.

Optoma hd700x + 84" pull down screen for £429 is what i would go for.
I would avoid 1080p dlp projectors like the x10 cos of there long throw at 8' you would get a 59" picture max. but with the x9 or hd700x your looking at 71".

Can highly recomend the optoma 700x and pull down screen had one myself about 4 months ago brill bit of kit for the money

Would have thought the room would have been to small to provide a decent viewing distance, when compared with a 37" LCD that is already in there?

Well, in projector terms, a 74" screen is small... yet would provide 4 times the screen area of a 37" LCD and still be very cinematic. Should be achievable at the distances he's talking about.

If you are going to paint the screen into the wall, "Duluxe Ice Storm" seems to be the paint of choice on the avforums. What will your viewing distance be?

6foot. However as i think more into this idea, the probability of it materialising is dying.
